This has been a busy and productive season for the music department at MacArthur Middle School. In November, Elizabeth Durhan on flute, Kari Lynn Widup and Tetra Lewis on clarinet, James Campbell on trumpetand Andrea Tonsfeldt and Hans Cuerin on trombone performed in the All-County Band. In December, Torri Jackson and Adam Booker representedthe school in the All-County Chorus.

The school's orchestra has been busy as well. Three students have been selected by audition to participate in the All-State Junior String Orchestra: Kara Motonaga andMichu Kwoun on violin and Mary Peterson on string bass. This group will perform March 7 in Ocean City for the Maryland Music Educators Association.


A "Superfit Test" was conducted recently at Odenton Elementary. The test consists of a mile run, sit-ups, chin-ups and body-fat evaluation. The following students averaged 75 percent on these four tests, with no score below 50 percent:

Second-grader Jerome Whitfield; third-graders Mary Gill, Kelly Matthews, Jeff Bell and Manuel Galvin; fourth-graders Tim Austin, Mindy Thompson, Lamar Parrish, Matt Cutille, Ken Burke and Nathan Wray; fifth-graders Aaron Day, Danita Hardy, Lindsay Kinslow, Gwen Gardner, Paul Fleetwood, Tony Reyes, Charlie Vint, Danny Aisquith and Andrew Stokrp.

The first-graders participated only in the mile-run portion of the test. Outstanding runnerswere Ron Gonski, James Fitts and Stacey Watson.


The Carter School of Dance, in conjunction with the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, will hold ballet classes for beginners to advanced students.

The classes are as follows:

Mondays, 10 to 11 a.m., beginning preschool; 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., beginners to experienced kindergarten and first grade; 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., beginners grades one through three; 5:30 to 7 p.m., experienced junior high school; 7 to 7:30 p.m., junior pointe; 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Cecchetti.

Tuesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., experienced grades two and three; 5:30 to 7 p.m., experienced grades four and five; 7 to 8:30 p.m., seniors ballet.

Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., experienced grade one; 4:30 to 6 p.m., intermediate grade four and five; 6 to 6:30 p.m., senior Pointe; 6:30to 8 p.m., junior high school.

The cost is $27 per month for one-hour classes, $32 per month for 1 1/2-hour classes. Registration is possible through February. For more information, call 647-1500.


The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will begin Jan. 27 at the O'Malley Senior Center, 1275 Odenton Road. Volunteers will be available to assist seniors 55 or older with their tax returns.

VITA volunteers will not assist with returns related to rental properties, partnerships, estates, trusts or self-employed income.

The hours are 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, by appointment only.

* On the lighter side of the O'Malley Center, the spontaneous and talented "Wandering Minstrels" will be on hand to entertain for the January birthday party, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Jan. 30.
