Col. Ray A. Gross Jr. received the Legion of Merit for exceptional service as the acting commander and deputy commander of the U.S. Army Chemical Research, Development and Engineering Center, Aberdeen Proving Ground, during his tour of duty from July 1989 through last August.

Gross was commended for "outstanding leadership, professionalismand commitment to the soldiers and civilians of CRDEC."

The Legion of Merit is the second-highest award presented to a military officer in the Army.

Gross earned a bachelor's of science degree in chemistry from the University of Tulsa and master's and doctoral degrees in chemistry from the University of Oklahoma.

He is the recipient of many military decorations, including two Bronze Stars, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, six Army Meritorious ServiceMedals, three Air Medals and five Army Commendation Medals.

He isserving with the Inspector General Activity as the chief of the Technical Inspection Division at the Army Material Command, Alexandria, Va.
