Bishop Francis Han Ting-Pi, 83, a Chinese bishop imprisoned for 21 years for refusing to consecrate bishops without the pope's permission, has died. Vatican Radio did not give the date or cause of death but reported that the funeral took place Sunday in Shanxi province. He was named a bishop in 1950 by then-Pope Pius XII. China severed ties with the Vatican in 1957, and Bishop Han was condemned to hard labor in 1958. He was freed in 1979.
