HILTON HEAD, S.C. — HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- No. 18 Auburn University shot 45 percent from the field in the second half, and stunned No. 5 and previously unbeaten University of Maryland, 69-60, in the championship game of the Hilton Head Super Shootout last night.
Maryland, 10 points ahead with four minutes left in the half, went scoreless the last 2 minutes, 27 seconds of the half and went off with a 35-33 lead. That disappeared less than a minute into the second half, and although the Terps tied the score twice more in the next three minutes, they did not regain the lead.
Maryland, which had won its first nine and was averaging 91 points a game, shot only 31 percent from the floor in the second half. Each side made 26 field goals, but Auburn had two more three-point goals and made 13 of 17 from the foul line to just 6 of 13 for Maryland.
Auburn had four scorers in double figures, led by the tournament's most valuable player, Suzette Sargeant, 19 points. Michele Andrew topped Maryland with 15 points. Jessie Hicks, the only one of the Terps to make the all-tournament team, had 11 points, but could make just one of seven free-throw chances.
