Ethel Jones Hucles, a retired teacher and counselor at Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore, died at her Ashburton home Dec. 18 of complications from an operation. She was 89.

A mass of resurrection for Mrs. Hucles was being offered today at St. James Episcopal Church, 829 N. Arlington Ave.

The Baltimore native attended Douglass High School and Howard University, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in the late 1920s. After earning a master's degree at Columbia University, Mrs. Hucles began teaching English at Douglass. She left Douglass to work for a time as a guidance counselor at Dunbar High School, then returned to Douglass, where she retired as a counselor in 1965.

She married the late Howard L. Hucles in 1932. He died in 1981.

She was active in the Howard University Alumni Association and the DuBois Circle, a literary club. She also was an active bridge player who loved opera, the theater and the symphony.

She is survived by her sister, Laura J. Newton of Baltimore; and by many cousins and godchildren.
