What do basketball, ice fishing and dog-sledding have in common?
Members of Western's girls basketball team will be doing all three during their stay in Anchorage, Alaska for The Great One Tournament, Jan. 2-5. The team departs for Alaska on Dec. 31.
"We have a slew of activities planned," Western coach Breezy Bishop said. "There will be plenty of time for basketball, but there will also be time to learn about their culture."
The second-ranked Doves were one of four teams in the country invited to join four Alaskan teams for the tournament.
Western needed to raise $10,000 for the trip, which it did through various fund-raisers and donations and through the efforts of Baltimore Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke and City Council President Mary Pat Clarke, Bishop said.
"We're very excited," she said. "It's the trip of a lifetime. How often do you get a chance to go to Alaska? I just hope they don't get too excited and forget about playing."

The Maryland Scholastic Association has agreed to accommodate the Baltimore City public schools in rescheduling sporting events originally slated for the week of Feb. 17-21, when the city schools will be closed for a one-week furlough.
According to MSA vice president Mark Schlenoff, athletic directors at the other MSA schools will work with athletic directors at city schools to reschedule basketball games for that week, and the MSA swim championships, originally scheduled for Feb. 18-19, will be moved back one week.
Originally, it was believed that the furlough would not affect the schedule, but Schlenoff said that the public school administration has indicated through its legal department that coaches cannot work students during the furlough.

Dulaney's Amanda White, The Baltimore Sun's 1991 Cross Country Runner of the Year, will be featured on ESPN's Scholastic Sports America today at 1 p.m.
White will appear as part of a broadcast of the Kinney Cross Country Championships National Finals in which she competed Dec. 14 in San Diego.

No sooner will top-ranked Dunbar have unpacked its bags from a successful trip to Hawaii, which ended with a 75-56 victory over Harker Prep early Sunday morning, than the Poets will be packing again to travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the Beach Ball Classic this weekend.
This tournament could offer Dunbar its stiffest test. Six of the teams participating have been ranked among the top 25 in the country.
In last week's USA Today Super 25 rankings, Alameda (Calif.) St. Joseph Notre Dame was second and Philadelphia Simon Gratz was third. Also ranked were Bronx (N.Y.) St. Raymond's (17th), Louisville Male (23rd) and Myrtle Beach (25th).
