Joe Krivak, who resigned nearly 2 1/2 weeks ago as Maryland's football coach, may become an assistant on Bobby Ross' staff if Ross is named coach of the San Diego Chargers.
San Diego coach Dan Henning was fired yesterday, and Ross, along with University of Miami coach Dennis Erickson, are the two top candidates to replace Henning.
"I chatted with Bobby the day before he went to the Aloha Bowl, but I've only read and seen what's in the paper like everybody else," Krivak said. "The thought of working in the NFL does intrigue me, and yes, I would be interested if a position became available.
"This is the time of the season when a number of things become available, and I'll sit back and take a look at my options. I learned a long time ago in this business that you never get your expectations too high, but also that you never let any opportunity slip by."
Krivak, 56, had a 20-34-2 record in five years as Maryland's coach, resigning after a two-week evaluation of the program by athletic director Andy Geiger.
Krivak served as a quarterback coach and offensive coordinator under Ross when Ross coached at Maryland from 1982 through 1986. Krivak helped groom quarterbacks Boomer Esiason, Frank Reich, Stan Gelbaugh, Neil O'Donnell and Scott Zolak, all of whom play in the NFL.
Krivak replaced Ross for the 1987 season when Ross became coach at Georgia Tech. Ross' Yellow Jackets will play Stanford in the Aloha Bowl tomorrow.
