Maybe the Rolling Stones can't get no satisfaction, but the Maryland Science Center is ecstatic about the reception the group's "At the Max" concert film is receiving.
As of last week, 16 of the 18 after-hours showings of the film on the Science Center's 55-foot-high by 70-foot-wide screen have sold out, according to director of marketing Steve Himmelrich. All but two of the remaining Saturday night screenings of the full-length movie -- shot during Stones' 1990 "Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle" tour -- are also sold out.
"We're delighted it's doing so well. We're leading every theater showing the film," said Mr. Himmelrich, who added that the Science Center was negotiating with the film's producers to extend its run beyond the scheduled Jan. 26 closing.
The Science Center has added four 10:30 p.m. showings Thursday to next Sunday and 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. showings Dec. 30. It also has a 9:30 p.m. screening New Year's Eve. "At the Max" normally is shown Thursdays to Saturdays at 8 p.m. (with occasional later showings) and Sundays at 7 p.m.
Science Center officials have said their share of ticket sales, which they have estimated only to be in six figures, would be used to support the facility's educational programs.
Tickets to "At the Max" are $13. Call (410) 481-6000 to order tickets; (410) 685-5225 for information.
Art by gun victims
Local multimedia artist Mary Ann Crowe has dealt with the issue of gun violence in her work. Now she wants to see how others would approach the subject.
Ms. Crowe is organizing a public mail art project titled "Collateral Damage: The Unseen Cost of Gun Violence," encouraging submissions from victims about the effect on their lives. She chose the open-submissions format because "I'm interested in opening this up to people who aren't artists."
Any two-dimensional medium, including writing, will be accepted 8 1/2 -by-11-inch or 11-by-17-inch format. An exhibition of the works is tentatively scheduled for September at the BAUhouse. Submissions should be sent to Project 7, P.O. Box 20840, Baltimore, Md. 21209-0840. Deadline is Jan. 6, but Ms. Crowe will extend it if notified in advance. Call (410) 532-2503.
