Despite a shaky first quarter, Dunbar High School, the area and the country's No. 1 boys basketball team, continued to roll Tuesday night with a 74-48 victory over Kamehameha High in the first round of the Iolani Prep Classic in Honolulu.

The Poets (5-0) were off last night and will play Iolani tonight (1 a.m. EST).

Dunbar committed eight turnovers in the first quarter and trailed, 25-14. But the Poets outscored the Warriors, 22-2, in the second quarter as senior center Donta Bright scored 12 of his game-high 24, giving the Poets a 36-27 halftime lead.

The Poets outscored Kamehameha, 24-7, in the third quarter to run the lead to 60-34.

"We had a horrible first quarter," said Dunbar coach Pete Pompey. "I think it was jet lag, but we played well in the last three quarters."

Senior guard Michael Lloyd added 15 points, 10 steals and five assists and junior forward Keith Booth had 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Iolani was the only Hawaiian team to win a first-round game. Iolani beat Seattle's Sammamish High, 63-39, in the opening round Tuesday. Philadelphia's Roman Catholic and Fairley High of Memphis also won easily.

"They [Iolani] are not a bad Hawaiian team, from what I've seen," said Pompey. "They have size and they have some kids that can play a little bit."
