Dulaney junior Amanda White completed the finest season ever by a Maryland high school cross country runner yesterday, as she placed second in the 13th Kinney Championships in San Diego.
The Kinney meet is regarded as the premier cross country test for high school runners. White covered the 5,000-meter course at Balboa Park in 17 minutes, 43.3 seconds, a performance bettered only by Liz Mueller of Waterford, Conn. Mueller, also a junior, was timed in 17:21.
That finish was a repeat of the Northeast Regional's in New York on Nov. 30, when Mueller beat White by 19 seconds. The Northeast Region produced the top three girls finishers yesterday; Kate Landau of Neversink, N.Y., was third in 17:54.
"It was pretty much a replay of two weeks ago, except this time I stayed with her longer," White said. "We were together at 2 1/2 miles, when we had to go up a hill for the second time. She pushed it up that hill, and I wasn't able to do the same.
"I came out here to win, but I have to be happy with a second-place finish."
Third as a sophomore and second as a junior, White completed the thought for 1992: "First as a senior."
A two-time state 4A champion and The Baltimore Sun Runner of the Year, White was beaten only by Mueller this fall.
White did not begin running for Dulaney High until a year ago. A national-class swimmer, she said that she planned to concentrate in the coming months on qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials in March.
"I don't know if I'm going to run track indoors," White said. "If I want to make the Olympic swim trials, I have to cut my times. If I do run indoors, I would race sparingly."
In her lone season of outdoor track, White set an area record in 3,200 meters.
In the boys race, Corey Ihmels of Williston, N.D., ran 15:03.6 to beat Jeffery Wilson of Newbury Park, Calif., who ran 15:18.7.
