Mary Louise Jones of Cumberland has been appointed to the Maryland State Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

The state group, the eyes and ears of the national civil rights commission, monitors alleged civil rights violations. It also interviews groups or individuals who have concerns regarding civil rights matters and can recommend changes in local, state or federal legislation.

Jones is supervisor of social studies, competency-based education and testing for the Allegany County Board of Education. Her experience includes serving as an organization specialist in race equity at the Maryland State Board of Education and chairwoman of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration committee.

She also is a consultant in teaching the process for reviewing literature for sexist and racist comments.

Jones' term on the 12-member advisory panel expires in May 1993.
