Judith K. Bauman
Retired nurse
Services for Judith K. Bauman, a retired nurse who worked in Maryland and in Israel over the years, will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Barranco and Sons Funeral Home, Ritchie Highway and Robinson Road in Severna Park.
Mrs. Bauman, who was 81 and lived in Severna Park, died Tuesday at the North Arundel Hospital after an apparent stroke.
She retired in 1970 as a surgical nurse at the old Naval Academy Hospital. Earlier, she worked at the Hospital for the Women of Maryland.
In 1974, she and her husband left their Glen Burnie home and lived for eight years in Israel -- the part of the world where she had grown up. There, Mrs. Bauman volunteered in a blood bank of the Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross.
In 1982, the Baumans came back to Anne Arundel County, and she applied herself to volunteer work in the Hospice of the Anne Arundel Medical Center. She also made porcelain dolls as a hobby.
The former Judith Korngold was born in Denver, but in 1921, when she was 11, moved to Palestine with her family -- which included her aunt, Golda Meir, who would become a prime minister of Israel.
Mrs. Bauman was a 1932 graduate of the British Government Hospital School of Nursing in Jaffa, now part of Tel Aviv. She came back to the United States in 1937 for post-graduate training.
Her husband, Jacob A. Bauman, is a retired civilian engineer at the Naval Ship Research and Development Laboratory in Annapolis.
In addition to her husband, her survivors include two daughters, Carol V. Forgione of Millersville and Alice Golembo of Westfield, N.J.; two brothers, Haim and Yonah Kama, both of Israel; and five grandchildren.
The family suggested memorial contributions to the Auraria Foundation, Post Office Box 173361, Denver 80217-3361, for the restoration of the family home in a collection of historic houses.
