'STUMP DUMP' FIRE GETS OUT OF CONTROL
A 150-foot-long pile of debris burned and smoldered for four hours Sunday at a well-known "stump dump" in Clarksville, the same site where a fire raged out of control on the property in October of 1989.
The dump, in the 4900 block of Shepherd's Lane, regularly burns uprooted tree stumps, but Sunday's blaze flared out of control, firefighters said. Smoke from the fire could reportedly be seen for several miles, they said.
Battalion Chief Donald R. Howell said the 30-foot-high pile of stump debris began smoldering heavily at 8 a.m. Firefighters brought the blaze under control with help from bulldozerson the farm property, owned by Alfred Bassler.
The fire in 1989 smoldered for several weeks and consisted of numerous underground fires, where stumps had been buried. Sunday's fire involved some underground burning, but it was not as extensive as the previous blaze, Howell said.
