Philip Joseph Neville, retired president of Reid-Avery Co., died Friday at his home in Homeland after a brief illness related to heart problems. He was 82.

A mass of Christian burial was being offered today at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, 5300 N. Charles St.

The Baltimore native joined the Dundalk welding-rod manufacturer in 1955 and retired in 1964.

Previously, he worked at Peat, Marwick & Mitchell as a tax manager and at Davis and Osbourne as a partner specializing in brokerage and tax audits. He also worked for the Western Maryland Railroad.

Mr. Neville studied accounting at Johns Hopkins University and became a certified public accountant in 1941. He served in the Army as an auditor from 1943 to 1945.

Mr. Neville was eucharistic minister and chairman of the finance committee at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.

He was active in the Towson Fencing Club for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Marie Besche; four daughters, Anne N. Oates of Watertown, Mass., and Marie P. Woodall, M. Cecilia Neville and Nancy M. Neville, all of Baltimore; one son, Philip J. Neville Jr. of Baltimore; a sister, Mary A. Neville of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.
