Head coach: Jim Morton (14th season)
Assistant coaches: Barbara Briggs and Steve Rose
1990-1991 record: 9-14, lost to Calvert in the Region IV quarterfinals
Returnees: Seniors Peggy Schreiber (forward), Tracey Zettle (guard/center) and Colette Marquis (forward); junior Erin Early (guard); sophomores Pam Patterson (center), Paula McDonald (guard) and Chiara Lee (guard).
Newcomers: Sophomore Jennifer Taylor (center); freshmen Cassidie Dunbar (guard) and Jennifer Buck (center).
Coach'soutlook: "We've picked up right about where we left off last year. We've got fairly decent size and a little more depth. There are a few tough teams in our region, but our county schedule could work to our advantage."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: With only three seniors returning, it is easy to consider the Seahawks inexperienced. But they're not, as all but three players have seen varsity action. The challenge for the Seahawks is staying with the competitive Bay Division and 4A teams like Broadneck, North County and Arundel. If they can manage that, then look for them to reach the playoffs. The differencewill be closing the communication gap between the seniors and freshmen.
SOUTHERN BULLDOGS
Head coach: Linda Kilpatrick (15th season)
Assistant coaches: Bob Groveston and Monica Chaney
1990-1991 record: 11-12, lost to Fairmont Heights in the Region III championship game
Returnees: Seniors Talaya Barnett (guard), Kim Smith (guard), Lindee Sisk (forward); sophomores Laekeka Wesley (center), Cari Sherbert (guard), Lisa Biederman (center), Leketia Mullen (center) and Laura Stockett (guard/forward).
Newcomers: Senior Elaine Phillips (forward); sophomores Julie Christiansen (guard/forward) and Michelle Raley (guard).
Coach's outlook: "We've got all five starters returning, so we're looking to build on where we left off last year. We don't have to start from scratch. I've got no weak players, lots of depthand a lot of ability. The seniors on the team were in ninth grade when we went to the state championships at Catonsville Community College. Now it's been a few years, so I think they're itching to get back there."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Smith, Wesley, Barnett and Sisk combined for an average of 38 points and 31 rebounds per game, and they're back after playing summer league ball. That should be enough to earn the Bulldogs a playoff berth, despite a tough Bay Division schedule.
SEVERNA PARK FALCONS
Head coach: Kevin McGrath (12th season)
Assistant coaches: Joe Gillespie and Bonnie Habicht
1990-1991 record: 16-7, lost to Old Mill in Region IV semifinals
Returnees: Seniors Nicki Cecere (guard), Tiffany Matthews (guard) and Jill Natwick (guard/forward); juniors Amy Carnaggio (guard), Lori Sharpless (guard), Brandee Snyder (forward/center) and Kate Marks (forward/center).
Newcomers: Juniors Jenny Shanahan (guard), Suzi Sharpless(guard), Kristin Drapalski (forward/center) and Dawn Jacukwicz (forward/center); sophomore Jennifer Conner (forward/center).
Coach's outlook: "We'll be bigger than last year. We lost some good athletic ability, but we still have good athletes. If they fill their roles, we're capable of going as far as last year, if not farther. We had someproblems jelling last year, so I just hope they come together better. If that happens, we can beat anybody on any given night."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Severna Park has enough talent to gain another playoff berth, but like everyone else, will have difficulty getting past Old Mill. A rough stretch to begin the season, when the Falcons are on the road more often than Hope and Crosby, will tell McGrath a great deal about his team.
SEVERN ADMIRALS
Head coach: Rhonda Warmsley (second season)
Assistant coach: Eric Austin
1990-1991record: 9-5, AIS A League
Returnees: Seniors Anne Schorreck (guard), Jen Wassif (forward/guard), Sarah Franey (center) and Grace Wu (guard/forward); junior Megan Pollock (center/forward); sophomores Emily Franey (forward) and Tracy Raley (forward)
Newcomers: SophomoresMelissa Morlock (forward), Becky Paul (guard) and Sarah Long (guard); freshmen Heidi Hammes (forward), Emily Long (center/forward) and Allison Clark (guard)
Coach's outlook: "The changes in the division will help us because it gives some stability to our schedule and it allows us to be more competitive. Last year, we'd beat a team by 40 points one week and then get beat by 40 points the next. The teams we compete against will be equal in depth and talent so we should do well. If they continue to develop their skills I think we should have a winning season. I'm not going to predict we win any championships, butwe will have a winning record."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: With Schorreck and Wassif working the perimeter and Sarah Franey controlling the boards, Severn can expect another successful season. The Admirals' balanced scoring attack should enable them to improve.
OLD MILL PATRIOTS
Head coach: Pat Chance (16th season)
Assistant coach: Jan Arnold
1990-1991 record: 24-2, Region IV and 4A state champions
Returnees: Seniors Cindy Davenport (forward) and Amy D'Annunzio (guard); juniors Stacy Himes (guard/forward), Allison Wentworth (forward), Chris Baer (guard), Lee Ann Lezzer (guard/forward), DebbieDawson (center) and Anne Chicorelli (forward/center); sophomore Michelle Salmon (guard).
Newcomers: Junior Tamika Ballard (forward/center); sophomore Jackie Bardelli (forward); freshmen Tiffany Slade (guard) and Tinnell Slade (guard).
Coach's outlook: "What got them there last year was hard work and teamwork, and that's what will get them back this year. We have quality depth. If we get everything going, with some of the younger players worked in and the older ones comingforth with their leadership, if we stick to that and no one gets hurt, we can have a good season. But there are so many intangibles. Theycan't forget what got them there in the first place."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: First place is where Old Mill should wind up, in the county, region and perhaps even state. It's a tall order for any team, especially one that's still fairly young, but the Patriots must be considered favorites to return to the states.
ST. MARY'S SAINTS
Head coach: Harry Dobson (first season)
Assistant coach: ChuckMiller
1990-1991 record: 20-9, fourth place in Catholic League
Returnees: Seniors Randall Goldsborough (guard), Amy Mikula (forward), Kristine Manning (forward), Kristin Flewlling (center) and Terri Green (guard); junior Ann Donovan (forward); sophomore Bridget Smith (guard).
Newcomers: Juniors Carolyn Manion (forward), Missy Holmes (guard), Maureen McDonough (guard), Jen Segree (guard), Jen Bures (guard), Kelly Karfgin (forward) and Nicole Bourgeois (forward).
Coach's outlook: "We'll try to improve on our fourth-place finish last year, but we have a very tough schedule. The teams we have to beat in order to win in the Catholic League are Mercy, IND (Institute of NotreDame) and Seton Keough. We'll try to continue the excellent program started by Carmine (Blades), Bill (Franey) and (Mike Riordan). Those three coaches won almost 100 games in the past five years, so we havesome big shoes to fill."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Laura Coakley has moved on to Wake Forest University, but the Saints are still loaded. Look for St. Mary's to once again challenge for top Catholic League honors.
NORTH COUNTY KNIGHTS
Head coach: Sally Entsminger (second season)
Assistant coaches: Alice Evans, Marianne Shultz and Vicky Plitts
1990-1991 record: 17-7, lost to Broadneck in the Region IV semifinals
Returnees: Seniors Tonya Kolodziejski (guard)and Renita Johnson (forward); juniors Nicole Faulkner (guard), BeckyWebb (forward) and Janette Merrick (forward).
Newcomers: Seniors Pam Garvin (guard) and Cheryl Banke (guard); juniors Nadine Slaven (guard), Melinda Domzolski (forward) and La Toya Baskerville (forward);sophomores Joy Farmer (center), Emma Ketterle (guard), Leanne Jones (guard), Samantha Smith (forward) and Karen Wick (guard).
Coach's outlook: "Last year is history, you don't look back. And right now, Ilike what I see in this team. The offense is always the slowest thing to come around, but we'll be quicker than last year."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Gone are four starters, including All-County center Kim Miller, who was the Knights' leading rebounder and scorer. The Knights will build their hopes around Johnson, a 6-foot center, and guard Kolodziejski, a superb athlete. They are the only returning seniors. Other than Faulkner, the squad is a youthful one, and will have problems living up to last year's accomplishments.
NORTHEAST EAGLES
Head coach: Calvin Vain (fifth season)
Assistant coaches: Dennis Snyder and Steve Sweet
1990-1991 record: 14-10, lost to Frederick Douglass in Region II semifinals
Returnees: Seniors Debbi Dadds (center), Stacy Reynolds (guard), Jen Vickery (forward) and Jenelle Williams (forward); junior Kathleen Smith (forward).
Newcomers: Senior Berna Baker (center); juniors Mandy Cody (guard), Jen Delsignore (center); freshmen Jen Johansen (guard), Maleah Rey (guard/forward) and Jamie Pleyo (guard).
Coach's outlook: "We're a little bit different this year; last year we were slower and more patient. This year, I think we'll set a faster pace. But there's a gap between the freshmen and the seniors, but the experience of the seniors is showing already."
Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Having made the playoffs the last two seasons, the Eagles have a tradition to uphold. As a sophomore, Dadds was on the squad that lost to Mount Hebron in the state semifinals. That certainly will provide motivation. But she'll need support from players like Vickery, Williams and Reynolds if the Eagles are going to match last year's accomplishment -- a feat made eventougher given this year's league realignment. Grouped in the Bay Division, Northeast must play some 4A schools twice.
