MEADE MUSTANGS

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Head coach: Molly Wilson (third season)

Assistant coaches: Del Hughes, Maureen Connelly and Jo Welch

1990-1991 record: 2-18

Returnees: Seniors Vonnita Pinkett (forward), Tara Brereton (guard); junior Adrian Toles (forward); sophomore Tenkia Matthews (guard).

Newcomers: Junior Connie Fink (guard/forward), LaToya Dobson (forward), Angie Rupe (guard/forward) and Kokita Driver (guard); sophomores Sherrie Marshall (guard) and Clantisa Watson; freshman Shannon Haggerty (guard).

Coach's outlook: "I don'tthink we'll set the world on fire, but we'll be in every ballgame. Last year, we were young and inexperienced. We're still young, but more experienced. I'd be very surprised if we aren't competitive. Our first three games can set the tone for the rest of the season. We seem to have a lot more drive, and we're playing with a lot more confidence. Last year, no one wanted to take the big shot. This year, they allwant to shoot."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: While Meade should improve a little with the help of forwards Toles and Pinkett, point guard Angie Bailey transferred out of the area, leaving the Mustangs with Brereton as the lone experienced backcourt returnee. Color Meade under .500.

GLEN BURNIE GOPHERS

Head coach: Patty Dages (first season)

Assistant coaches: Allison Earley, Jeff Hopkins and Don Dzambo

1990-1991 record: 10-12

Returnees: Senior Jennifer Roth (forward/center); juniors Kelly Rodgers (guard), Jessica Pearce (wing) and Melissa Schaffer (guard).

Newcomers: Seniors Ryann Levo (guard) and Tonia Walker (forward); junior Amy George (forward/center); freshmen Bridget Davis (guard) and Amanda Sikes (guard).

Coach's outlook: "My goal is to bring out each player's fullest potential. If that happens, I'm confident we can build a strong foundation. We have a long way to go, but if we succeed in that area, it will be downhill from there. These are great kids. I don't foresee any problems. We should do decently."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: In her first season as a head coach, Dages has what she calls a "cohesive" group that still needs some tinkering before it's ready to take the floor against the better teams in the county. This is a young squad with much to learn, but the Gophers have quite a teacher in Dages. They are not likely to sneak into the playoffs this season, but Dages isn't askingfor the world, just enough progress and maturity over the course of the year to build toward a better 1992-1993.

CHESAPEAKE COUGARS

Head coach: Ginger Woods (fourth season)

Assistant coach: Dean Castle

1990-1991 record: 8-11

Returnees: Seniors Deanna Castle (guard) and Michele League (forward); juniors Denise Perrone (guard/forward) and Staci Jenkins (guard).

Newcomers: Junior Renee Peters (forward); sophomores Megan Zanwambeke (forward) and Kim Woody (forward).

Coach's outlook: "We're not going to be super tall so we're going to try and use our speed to beat teams down the floor. We're looking at possibly running a three-guard offense, and we'll be doing a lot of shifting people in and out so that we can run the floor and use ourspeed. We have several talented freshmen that we've bumped up to varsity, but it's still too early to tell if they will contribute. I think we're going to have more speed and a more balanced attack this year. We're going to push for a transitional game."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: A lack of size and varsity experience could make for a long season for Chesapeake. The Cougars again are loaded with guards, but lack any true height. This shortfall in itself will keep Chesapeake battling to keep its head above the county's choppy 4A League waters.

BROADNECK BRUINS

Head coach: Bruce Springer (fourth season)

Assistant coaches: Leann Shuck and Tom Cole

1990-1991 record: 18-6, lost to Old Mill in Region IV finals

Returnees: Seniors Jennifer Chapman (forward/center), Michelle Meyer (guard), Sarah Bannat (forward), April Quigley (guard), Amy Chaney (guard), Nikki Green (guard), Jen Jasick (forward) and Ava Tasker (guard); juniors Missy Lewandowski (guard), Susie Goodrich (guard) and Karen Chesley (guard).

Newcomers: Senior Kennita Kirby Jones (forward); junior Aimee Nichols(guard); sophomore Julie Barr (forward/center); freshman Jill Smith (guard).

Coach's outlook: "One of our strengths will be experience, especially early in the year. And depth is another thing I hope will be in our favor. If the young girls come on, and I put Kennita in that category because she hasn't played in a while, we'll get better and better in the middle. Jen Chapman is the only girl back from two years ago and she wants to go back (to the state playoffs). But it's not going to be easy."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Losing 6-footers Theresa Cornish and Andrea Macey has changed the look of Springer's team, which now must rely more on quickness than size. Being housed in the Bay Division makes accumulating playoff points a little tougher, but the Bruins should return to the regions.

ARUNDEL WILDCATS

Head coach: Lee Rogers (third season)

Assistant coaches: Donna McGowan, Jerry Quickel and Don Banks

1990-1991 record: 15-8, lost to Severna Park in first round of playoffs

Returnees: Seniors Latoy Long (center), Julie James (guard), Mary Pat Fannon (guard) and Michelle Harrison (forward); juniors Sara Carson (forward), Sarah Melby (forward), Heather Sinclair (guard) and Alina Smith (guard), sophomores Julie Musitano (center) and Tami Gosheff (forward).

Newcomers: Juniors Courtney Finch (guard), Virginia Gonski (forward), Carolyn Pointek (center), Tee Holmes (guard) and Stephanie Carpenter (guard).

Coach's outlook: "We have 10 returning players, so we're pretty excited about the season. We need our seniors to take over because they know how to win and they don't quit. When our backs were against the wall last season, they didn't quit. They played their hearts out, andwe're going to need that again this year. We have a lot of players who can play and we have a lot of depth."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: As intense a coach as Rogers is, it's a sure bet that he'll keep last year's dream season from going to his players' heads. Even without Donna Parker and Tiffany Clayton, Arundel looks solid all the way around.

SPALDING CAVALIERS

Head coach: Paul Leimkuhler (eighthseason)

Assistant coaches: Paul Metrinko, Calvin Vain Jr. and Karen Frank

1990-1991 record: 16-12, second in the Catholic League

Returnees: Senior Kristen Swift (guard); juniors Karen Keeley (guard), Amy Langville (guard), Kelly Mabe (guard) and Katie Meloro (guard); sophomore Carrie Parsons (forward).

Newcomers: Juniors Aisha Boyd (forward) and Lisa Canter (forward); sophomores Dabney Waller (guard) and Emily Matt (forward).

Coach's outlook: "It looks like St. Mary's, IND and Mercy will be real strong, and that we'll be in the rest of the pack with the other five teams. We only have one senior this year, so we've gone from 10 years of varsity experience down to two, just like that. We're young, but enthusiastic. They've worked hard in practice, and they've been picking things up quickly. We have a very intelligent team, but our two shortfalls will be a distinct lack of height and experience. One of the shortfalls will be cured in the month of December, though, when we play 14 games."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Leimkuhler isn't expecting much from his Cavaliers this season, but with a proven player like Langville, he won't be counting out any surprises.

ANNAPOLIS CHRISTIAN

Head coach: Lori Ebels(second season)

Assistant coach: Will LaRose

1990-1991 record:7-13, finished fourth in the Christian School Athletic Association

Returnees: Seniors Vicki Goss (forward/center), Cindy Whipple (guard/forward), Holly Sarich (guard), Sharma Wehr (center) and Maia Czebotar (guard); juniors Rayelyn Drake (guard) and Carrie Linder (guard);sophomore Rosalind Brown (forward).

Newcomers: Seniors Heather Davis (forward) and Monica Johnston (forward); juniors Allison Hedlesky(guard/forward) and Mandy Galuski (guard/forward); sophomore Stacey Sardella (guard).

Coach's outlook: "We're hoping to utilize our height this year. After being new to the area last year and having a team with a lot of new things being taught, it's exciting to come in this year with some experienced players. We're hoping to finish no lower than third. And if a couple things go our way, who knows?"

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: The Eagles should be much improved over last season, when there were no seniors and no leadership. Surely, they'll enjoy a distinct height advantage over most CSAA teams, if not all of them.

ANNAPOLIS PANTHERS

Head coach: Teresa Ross (second year)

Assistant coaches: Leon Malczewski, Dave Griffith

1990-1991 record: 5-17

Returnees: Seniors Lisa Roberts (forward/center), Shalundra Hunt (guard/forward), Missy Gorden (guard) and Deidre Downs (forward); juniors Kai Simms (center/forward) and Gina Graves (guard); sophomores Cristi Samaras (guard) and Aleks Rhines (forward).

Newcomers: Junior Jennifer Charbonneau (guard); sophomores Shannon Henderson (forward/center) and Janelle Queen (center/forward); freshmen Shaila Kulkarni (guard) and Emily Nugent (guard).

Coach's outlook: "I've been kind of disappointed after both of our scrimmages. I thoughtwe'd be better. The low post position is pretty strong, but we'll beyoung at the guard spot. But with our inexperience in the backcourt, the question is can we get the ball down to the post players. We would like to win 10 games this year. We're not on the same level as OldMill, but I would like to think that we can play with the Meades andthe Glen Burnies. I'd like to think that we'd finish near the middleof the pack."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: It's obvious that the Panthers aren't ready to contend with Old Mill and Severna Park, but they should be able to have a fair shot at finishing third in theFriendship Division in front of Chesapeake, Glen Burnie and Meade.
