National League president Bill White will ask the Cincinnati Reds next week about the former team doctor's allegations that the Reds did not provide quality medical care for players, a league spokeswoman said yesterday.

Katy Feeney said league officials have seen only newspaper stories about Dr. Michael Lawhon's parting shot at the Reds when he quit Monday as the team's physician.

"The league will, I'm sure, look into it and see where it all comes from," Feeney said. "Obviously, players' health is a concern."

Lawhon said he refused to lower his standards of medical care. He accused the Reds of releasing misleading reports about injuries and refusing to provide necessary equipment.

"I'm sure Bill will talk to the Reds about it," Feeney said.

* YANKEES: Robert Nederlander, who was given control of the club last year after George Steinbrenner was barred from running the team, said yesterday that he will resign as managing general partner on Dec 31.

Steinbrenner, who controls 55 percent of the team's stock, made the announcement, but did not name a proposed replacement for Nederlander, who said he needs to devote additional time to his family's theatrical business.

"I knew when I asked Robert to assume the duties of general partner on such short notice, that I was imposing upon a deep personal friendship," Steinbrenner said in a statement. "He told me at that time that he did not know how long he would be able to assume these duties, but that he would help all of us out by becoming managing general partner for a while."

* ANGELS: Left-hander Chuck Finley, bothered by a sore toe most of the 1991 season, will have surgery today to correct the problem.

The Angels said that infielder Bobby Rose also is scheduled to undergo surgery, an arthroscopic procedure on his right shoulder. Rose's operation is scheduled for tomorrow.
