ANNAPOLIS PANTHERS

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Head coach: John Brady (15th season)

Assistant coaches: Roy Brownand Ken Goncz

1990-1991 record: 21-4, lost to Parkdale in state 4A semifinals

Returnees: Seniors Rob Wooster (swingman), Marvin Brown (forward), Josh Gannon (guard) and Tim Howe (forward); juniors Lozonnah James (guard) and Wendell Williams (forward).

Newcomers: Junior William Gross (center); sophomores Kelsey Watkins (guard), Larry Brown (forward) and Joe Pergerson (center).

Coach's outlook: "I can't really saythat we have any weaknesses on the team. We're right on course to where we want to be. Overall, we're looking pretty good. We have a goodblend of experience, quickness and shooting. There's absolutely nothing that I could be displeased about at this point. I have some guys on this team who are going to surprise a lot of people. It's really aluxury when you can say that 20 of the guys you cut from varsity have the potential to play high school ball."

Anne Arundel County Sunoutlook: Sure, the Panthers have the youngest squad in recent memory, but as most county fans know, Brady's charges won't surrender theirRegion IV crown too easily. Look for Annapolis to finish first or second during the regular season.

SEVERNA PARK FALCONS

Head coach: Wayne Mook (11th season)

Assistant coaches: Charles Duckett and Jeff Hunter

1990-1991 record: 10-13, lost to Meade in Region IV quarterfinals.

Returnees: Seniors Rich Riffle (center), Scott Brown (guard), Gerald Cager (forward), Bob Evans (guard/forward), Matt Glenn (guard) and Kevin Schultz (guard); junior Tim Bowerman (guard); sophomore Ron Green (forward).

Newcomers: Seniors Craig Dorsey (guard) and Yauel Alson (forward); juniors Darrell Holland (forward) and Deamon Wilson (forward); sophomore David Orso (guard).

Coach's outlook:"We probably have the biggest size in the county. We're definitely shooting for the playoffs. Based on what we did last year, our weakestposition was point guard, and Dorsey has filled it well. The kids should make tremendous strides this year. This is one of the best ballclubs I've had in years."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Having lost only one starter and finding a capable point guard are just a fewof the reasons Mook is so enthused. He loves the Falcons' size -- three players stand 6 foot 5 and only two are under 6 foot -- and theirdepth. Mook will be greatly disappointed if Severna Park doesn't make the playoffs. It has a legitimate chance.

ST. MARY'S SAINTS

Headcoach: Jim Sheehan (10th season)

Assistant coach: Dave Lombardi

1990-1991 record: 5-20 in the Maryland Scholastic Association B Conference.

Returnees: Senior Rory Kiernan (forward/center); juniors Joe Greenlee (forward) and Ed Zelezen (forward/center); sophomore Mike Greenlee (guard).

Newcomers: Senior Chris Dudley (center/forward); juniors Charlie McLoud (guard), James McCutchun (guard), Mike Craven (forward) and Pat Cronyn (guard/forward); sophomores Mike Greenlee(guard), Mark Kiefer (guard), Mike Smith (guard) and George McNelly (forward).

Coach's outlook: "We're young, but I still think we canbe competitive. The more court time these youngsters see, the more experience they'll get. Hopefully, they're going to be improving everytime they step on the court. We didn't have the horses to run with in the B Conference last season. Having no interior game really hurt us in our scoring and rebounding and they were the main factors that contributed to our win-loss record. We have to improve our interior game, and with some of our new people, we should be more effective offensively and defensively on the inside."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: The Saints are young, but playing in MSA C should give them a chance to at least double last year's wins.

NORTHEAST EAGLES

Head coach: John Barbour (13th season)

Assistant coaches: Brandt Schanberger, Peter Pasqualini and Tom Caines

1990-1991 record: 16-8, lost to Forestville in Class 2A Region III championship game.

Returnees: Seniors Gene Pleyo (point guard), Scott Rey (guard), Chad Sanschagrin (center), Chad O'Brien (forward/guard), Andy Becker (forward) and Tyler Clymer (guard).

Newcomers: Seniors Lamont Miller (guard/forward) and Mike Shuster (forward); juniors Steve Louck (forward), Paul Thompson (forward/center) and Rich Heffner (guard).

Coach's outlook: "We had a lot more overall experience last year. This year, it'sdown to three players and there aren't a lot of guys with varsity court time, so inexperience will probably hurt us. We've got some toughgames right away, so we will be able to tell pretty soon."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Gone is Steve Strauss, who scored five of the Eagles' nine three-pointers in their season-ending loss. AlthoughPleyo is the only returning full-time starter, having played on the varsity since his freshman season, Rey is called "Strauss' clone" by Barbour. They'll be joined in the starting line-up by three seniors, whom Barbour hopes will show maturity if not court sense.

SOUTHERN BULLDOGS

Head coach: Tom Albright (27th season)

Assistant coaches: Ted Gott and Dan Robinson

1990-1991 record: 13-11, lost to Northeast in the 2A Region III semifinals.

Returnees: Seniors Chris Thomas (center), Gary Makell (forward), Jesse Marks (forward) and CurtisHolland (guard); juniors John Gee (forward/center), Terrell Jones (forward) and Troy Dennis (forward).

Newcomers: Juniors Chris Busch (forward), Greg Gibson (guard), Kenny Joyce (center), Mike Marks (guard), Kevin Mason (forward/center) and Fred McGhee (forward/center); sophomores Chatney Howard (utility), Jamar Mullen (guard/forward), Jason Pokinis (forward) and Andrian Turner (guard).

Coach's outlook: "This is the way I like it. If I took all of these kids and put them in a basket and pulled five of them out, any one of them could go in and play. I'll be able to do what I've always wanted to do -- run them in and out. Right now, I have no set starters, but that doesn't bother me."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: Although three starters have graduated, including 5-foot-7 top scorer Vince Barnett, the Bulldogs have talent in abundance. But Southern will face stiff tests allyear long as members of the Bay Division, playing against 4A teams. Morale is high, and the Bulldogs' playing intensity should match it.

NORTH COUNTY KNIGHTS

Head Coach: Brad Wilson (second season)

Assistant coaches: Walt Robuck and Al Pindell

1990-1991 record: 4-18

Returnees: Seniors Troy Ross (guard) and Sean Farmer (forward); juniors Shawn Moyer (guard), Rob Miller (guard), Robert Kelly (forward), Eric Howard (forward), Vinnie Elliott (guard) and Greg Sabo (guard); sophomores Reggie Moore (guard) and Teon Carter (guard).

Newcomers: Juniors Rick Spencer (guard) and Chris Martin (forward); sophomores Jarryn Avery (forward), Damon Henriques (forward) and Matt Lentz (forward).

Coach's outlook: "Last year we didn't have anyone on varsity who stood above 6 foot 1, but this year, we've got some size. Everyone was a part of last year's program except Spencer. There's a strong work ethic. Practices are great, and they're working real hard."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: The Knights will play a fast-break style. And with six games scheduled before the Christmas vacation, Wilson will have a pretty good idea if North County can make a run for the playoffs and possibly get a couple of confidence-boosting victories. The Knights open against Wilson's former coach, Meade's ButchYoung, in two days, before facing foes like South River and Broadneck.

SOUTH RIVER SEAHAWKS

Head coach: Ken Dunn (15th season)

Assistant coaches: Jack Jordan and George Small

1990-1991 record: 10-11, lost to Thomas Stone in first round of Class 3A Region III playoffs.

Returnees: Seniors Albert Lee (guard), Edmund Hicks (swing), Jon Bolster (guard), Fred Goodson (center) and Jim Wilson (swing); juniors Darren Hill (center/forward), Jason Fullmer (center/forward) and Robert Randall (center/forward).

Newcomers: Seniors Brian Colbert (swing) and Jake Cameron (guard); junior Jason Myrick (swing); freshmen Russell Tongue (swing), Corey Davis (guard), Clayton Wilson (center/forward), Joey Renoe (guard).

Coach's outlook: "We've got some height for a change and we've got the experience, so it's a matter of continuing hard work and refining things. We've got a few guys back who had a significant amount of playing time, but we'll need leadership from all of them."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: South River will be among the tallest teams in the county, with one player standing 6 foot 7 and three more who are just two inches shorter. So rebounding will be a strength, but shooting has been a problem. The Seahawks will know quickly how much improvement they have made, since they lost last year to each of the first five opponents on this year's schedule.

SEVERN ADMIRALS

Head coach: Jim Doyle (sixth season)

Assistant coach: John Beckman

1990-1991 record: 15-7, lost to St. Paul's in Maryland Scholastic Association C Conference semifinals.

Returnees: Seniors Graydon Ripley (forward) and Jason Moran (guard); juniors Brad Fowler (guard), Chris Pitkin (forward) and Jake Mack (guard).

Newcomers: Seniors Adam Williams (guard), Andrew Webb (center),Maurice Henein (forward) and Chris Hopkinson (forward); juniors Dudley Dixon (guard) and Eric Nelson (forward); freshman John Vereen (guard).

Coach's outlook: "We only lost one starter from last year (Brendan Haggerty), so we have the nucleus of our team back. We have seven guys with real experience and the last five have no basketball experience so depth will be a question mark. I think with the experiencewe have, we want to be competing for the conference championship. Our starting five can compete with anyone. We've upgraded our schedule and I think that will help us down the road to make us better."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: The Admirals have only two returning seniors, but they return three juniors with three years of varsity experience in Fowler, Pitkin and Mack. Mack is still out with a leg injury, but is expected back for the Christmas tournament and should helpSevern in its quest for a title.

MEADE MUSTANGS

Head coach: ButchYoung (15th season)

Assistant coaches: Jimmy Meade and Trey Jenkins

1990-1991 record: 18-6, lost to Broadneck in Region IV semifinals

Returnees: Seniors Brian Parker (center), Ian Taylor (swingman), Butch Sommerville (guard) and Luis Morales (guard).

Newcomers: Seniors Robby Sommerville (forward) and John Oxendine (guard); junior Derrick Darrett (guard).

Coach's outlook: "Right now, we just don't seem to be playing together as a team. We don't have lots of cohesiveness. It's been hard for them to get into a rhythm. We're going to try and increase the tempo. We'd like to run more, but so far every time we try to run they throw the ball all over the gym. Our bench strength concerns me. There's no way we can play with just six players. We're definitely going to need more help than that. No matter what anybody says, the road to the state playoffs will go through Annapolis, but I look for the entire league to be well-balanced."

Anne Arundel County Sun outlook: If the Mustangs get their usual complement of athletes, five or six of them combined with an improved Brian Parker should be enough to give Annapolis a run for regional honors.
