Harbor Hospital Center news: A new federal law, the Patient Self-Determination Act, went into effect yesterday. The legislation increases a patient's control over his or her care, particularlyat the end of life when the patient may not be able to speak.
Thehospital will be sponsoring a free program, "Exercise Your Right: Put Your Health Care Decisions in Writing," 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Participants will learn more about advance directives, such as a living will, durable power of attorney for health care and discussions with physicians.
The hospital will be asking all adults who are being admitted to an inpatient unit if they have an advance directive. If theydo not, the hospital will provide the patient with a packet of information, including the forms for the living will and durable power of attorney, said Jackie Breeden, director of public relations.
Although people wishing to compete a living will or durable power of attorney do not need a lawyer's assistance for either form, they do need two persons who are not relatives, potential heirs or care givers to witness their signatures.
State law prohibits hospital employees from witnessing patients' signatures on these documents, so it's best to have the forms filled out ahead of time.
For more information about the program, or to receive a packet on advance directives, call 347-3441.
