Allegany stops Middletown for title

COLLEGE PARK -- Allegany's Steve Milburn rushed for 101 yards and scored two first-quarter touchdowns to lead the Campers to a 12-6 win over Middletown (Frederick County) in the state Class 2A title game yesterday at Byrd Stadium.

The championship was Allegany's third in the past four years and sixth overall, tying The Campers with Springbrook for the most in state history.

Milburn led a Campers rushing attack that gained 230 yards, including 55 in the fourth quarter, when Allegany (11-1) had the ball for 9 minutes, 24 seconds.

In the first quarter, Milburn scored on an 8-yard run with 5:24 left, and on a 27-yard run on fourth-and-one, just before the quarter ended.

tTC Middletown's (11-2) cut the deficit to 12-6 on a 21-yard pass from Sean Ganley to Jason Delauter with 5:23 left in the first half.

The game was the Campers' eighth appearance in the finals since 1978.
