LAUREL -- Star Minister drew the dreaded outside post for yesterday's Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship at Laurel Race Course, but the filly quickly overcame the disadvantage before posting a 14-1 upset.

"She out-broke them all," said winning rider Edgar Prado, "and that's where she won the race."

After gaining excellent position behind Set To Fly, Star Minister drove clear before finishing nearly a length ahead of late-closing Good Looking Terri. Just past the wire, Prado gave an uncharacteristic wave of his whip. "I never did that before," said Prado, Laurel's leading rider. "Not even when I won the International [last month, on a 44-1 shot, Leariva]. I was too surprised to do it then."

Deputation, the 2-1 favorite, finished third, another three lengths back and a nose ahead of Set To Fly.

The victory could give Star Minister year-end honors as top Maryland-bred 2-year-old filly.

She could have started a "Daily Double" for owner Robert Meyerhoff, who also owns Sticks and Bricks, a top colt scheduled to run in the Maryland Juvenile Championship for colts and geldings on Dec. 7.

Star Minister, a daughter of Deputy Minister, earned $90,000 from a $150,000 purse. She is trained by Richard Small, who did not attend the race because he is serving a suspension for a medication violation. Sid Watters Jr., Small's uncle, was listed as trainer.
