BOMB SCARE: Southern District -- Police responding to a report of a bomb inside a house in the 800 block of Washington Blvd. found a deactivated 75mm artillery shell. Police said the owner of a vacant house entered the dwelling last night and found what appeared to be several sticks of dynamite bound together with black tape. A member of the police bomb disposal squad examined the device and determined the sticks were several road flares, not dynamite. While the officer was inside the house, he found the harmless military projectile and removed it. Police today were attempting to locate the last residents of the house and learn who left the shell there.
SHOOTING: Western District -- Two men were shot in the legs Tuesday night after an argument with two other men. Police said Emanuel Snow, of the 600 block of N. Carrollton Ave., and Melvin Snow, of the 500 block of N. Gilmor St., were in the 1700 block of Lorman Ave. around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when they became involved in an argument with the other men. Police said that after the argument broke off and the Snows were walking away, the others followed them to the 1600 block of Delano Court, where one of them pulled out a handgun and shot each in the left leg. Police said the victims were taken to the University of Maryland Medical Center, where they were admitted. Police said it wasn't immediately known if the victims are related.
SHOOTING: Western District -- Frank James, of the 2700 block of W. North Ave., reported he was in the 500 block of Gold St. Tuesday night when a man with a handgun shot him in the mouth, thigh and buttocks. Police said the gunman escaped and James was taken to the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he was admitted. Police said that, because of the mouth wound, James was unable to say who shot him and why.
RAPE: Western District -- A woman told police she was forced to accompany a man into a vacant dwelling in the 700 block of N. Fulton Ave., where she was raped. She was treated at a hospital.
ROBBERY: Southwestern District -- Samuel Adams, of the first block of S. Culver St., reported he was in the 3400 block of Frederick Ave. early yesterday when he was stopped by a man with a knife, who demanded money. Police said Adams gave $20 to the man.
ROBBERY: Southwestern District -- Monica Munson, of the 1100 block of N. Ellamont St., told police she was robbed of $20 by a man who accosted her in the 2900 block of Belmont Ave. about 1 a.m. yesterday. Later, police arrested a suspect and were holding him at the station pending charges and a bail hearing before a District Court commissioner.
ROBBERY: Southwestern District -- A woman was robbed of a small sum of money early yesterday while walking in the 2900 block of Edmondson Ave. Police said Alfreda Thomas, of the 2500 block of Calverton Heights Ave., was walking alone about 3 a.m. when she was accosted by a man who threatened her with a stick and demanded money. Police said he man robbed Thomas of $6.

KIDNAP/ROBBERY: Garrison District -- A man was forced to withdraw money from his bank account by two men who kidnapped him at gunpoint from the Greenspring Shopping Center. Robert Howard Alpern, whose address was not available, told police he was in back of the shopping center shortly after 4 p.m. yesterday when he was stopped by two men, one armed, who forced him back into his 1977 Volvo and ordered him to lie on the floor with a coat over his head. After arriving at a 24-hour bank teller machine on Old Court Road, the armed man and his accomplice forced the victim to withdraw money from his account. Then Alpern was driven to Woodlawn Cemetery, off Liberty Road near Patterson Avenue, and ordered out of the car, which the men stole. Police said Alpern's 1977 Volvo bearing Maryland license plates RVS-402 had not been found.
OFFICER ROBBED: Woodlawn District -- An off-duty Baltimore police officer assigned to the Northern District was robbed of her purse about 9:30 p.m. yesterday as she was about to enter her apartment in the first block of Mountbatten Court. Officer Robyn Jeanette Montgomery told police she was walking to her front door when a man came up behind her and demanded her purse while implying he had a gun. Police said Montgomery scuffled with the man and was struck in the face. Police said when Montgomery's purse fell to the pavement, the man picked it up and fled. The purse, police said, did not contain Montgomery's revolver but did contain her badge, police identification card, cash and other property. Police said Montgomery was treated at the scene by the crew of an ambulance. Residents who saw the man flee told police he drove off in a Nissan.
ROBBERY: Cockeysville District -- Police said a man with a handgun entered the Cockeysville Citgo station in the 9900 block of York Road shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday from a nearby woods and forced the attendant to give him an undisclosed sum from the cash register.
ROBBERY: White Marsh District -- Employees of the Hallmark card shop in the 8600 block of Philadelphia Road told police they gave a man an undisclosed sum from the cash register after he approached the counter and gestured as though he was carrying a weapon in his pocket.
Anne Arundel County
ARREST: Annapolis -- A 19-year-old Annapolis man was arrested last evening outside the Governor's Mansion and charged with disorderly conduct after allegedly shouting obscenities at guests of Gov. William Donald Schaefer who were touring the grounds following a reception. State Police at the Annapolis Barracks said a man standing on the pavement beyond a wrought-iron fence cursed at the guests and state troopers assigned to the governor's security detail cautioned him several times before arresting him. Police said Sean Faudre was held overnight at the barracks pending a bail hearing today before a District Court commissioner.
BURGLARY: Glen Burnie -- A resident of the 700 block of Powhatan Beach Road reported that someone broke into his garage by forcing a door and stole property valued at more than $3,000. Police said the thief escaped with a motor and several hand and power tools.
THEFT: Millersville -- Police said someone broke into a car while it was parked in the 500 block of Millshire Drive and stole a compact disc player and stereo speakers. Police said the property was valued at nearly $1,000 and that entry was gained by forcing a passenger door open.
RAPE: Glen Burnie -- A 26-year-old Laurel woman told Eastern District police she was walking in back of the 8000 block of Nolpark Court shortly before 10 p.m. yesterday when she was attacked by two men who dragged her into a nearby woods and raped her. She was taken by ambulance to North Arundel Hospital, where she was treated and released. Police said the woman was unable to give them a detailed description of the men.

ARSON: Lineboro -- Police and fire officials said a fire over the weekend that caused at least $50,000 damage to a two-story Lineboro Road barn was deliberately set. Bob Thomas, a deputy state fire marshal, said the wooden barn was owned by James Lancaster, of Perry Hall, Baltimore County, and leased to John Mazur. He said 40 firefighters from county stations at Lineboro, Hampstead and Manchester, and one from Pleasant Hill, Pa., brought the fire under control in about an hour. No injuries were reported. Thomas said a reward is being offered by the Arson Control Association of Maryland for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who set the fire. ROBBERY: Taneytown -- Police today continued to search for a man who robbed the manager of a restaurant of an undisclosed sum while the victim and another employee were leaving the building after closing time. Police said the manager and an employee were leaving the Pizza Hut in the 4000 block of Old Taneytown Road shortly before midnight Tuesday when a man with a handgun stepped out from behind a large electrical box and demanded the night deposit bag the manager was carrying. After being given the bag, the gunman, who wore a ski mask, fled.
THEFT: Westminster -- A resident of the first block of Greenwood Ave. reported that someone broke into his car while it was parked near his home and stole a cassette player and several tapes. Police said the property was valued at nearly $350.
THEFT: Westminster -- An employee of a fast-food restaurant at the Crossroads Square Shopping Center reported that someone entered her locker in the employees' section and stole her coat. Police said the coat was valued at $500.
Howard County
RAPE/ARREST: Columbia -- County police said Jose Decarmen Chaparro-Nemog, 50, of Riverdale in Prince George's County, remains in the detention center in lieu of $50,000 bail on charges that he raped a woman Saturday.
ROBBERY: Columbia -- Two men, one with a handgun and the other using a walkie-talkie, robbed the People's drug store in the 5400 block of Harpers Farm Road, Harpers Choice Village Center, Monday night of an undisclosed sum. Police said that when an employee entered a rear office to get her coat after closing time, two men who apparently had hidden inside the store emerged from their hiding place. Police said the men grabbed that woman and another employee and bound their legs and arms with tape. The men then rifled at least one cash register and escaped. Police said that during the robbery, the man with the walkie-talkie appeared to be talking with someone waiting for them outside. Police said neither store employee was injured.
