Terps, N.C. in ACC field hockey final

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Freshman midfielder Laura Harmon and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year Boukje Vermeulen each scored a goal to give Maryland (15-3-1) a 2-0 victory over Virginia (10-6-4) in an ACC tournament field hockey semifinal yesterday.

Harmon tipped in a goal during a scramble at the 14 minute, 20 second mark, and Vermeulen connected on a shot inside the circle.

Maryland will meet North Carolina (12-5-1), a 1-0 winner over Duke (12-8) yesterday, for the title at 3 p.m. at UNC's Navy Field.

* Cathy Swezey scored with 5:59 left in overtime to give defending national champion Trenton State a 1-0 victory over Salisbury State (11-6-1) in the NCAA Division III Regional final.

Trenton State (17-0-1) advances to its 10th NCAA semifinal round match in 11 years.

The pairings and the site of the Final Four will be announced next week.

Cross country

Senior John Robinson became the second Johns Hopkins runner in the last five years to win the Middle Atlantic Conference individual championship yesterday at Media, Pa.

Robinson covered the 8,000-meter course in 25 minutes, 50 seconds, three seconds ahead of Franklin and Marshall's Steve Monaco. Tim Marean of Johns Hopkins won the 1987 race at Philadelphia's Belmont Plateau.

The Blue Jays finished sixth out of 21 teams. Western Maryland was 16th, led by junior Derek Johnston's (Hammond) 29th-place finish (27:37).

The Johns Hopkins women finished third out of 18 teams with 145 points. Jen Maranzano of Haverford was the women's winner with a time of 18:26.

Haverford earned its third straight men's conference crown and sixth in the last seven years, and Franklin and Marshall won its sixth MAC women's title in the 12-year history of the event.
