Patterson handed the Maryland Scholastic Association B Conference football title to Edmondson yesterday by routing visiting Northwestern, 41-14, while Edmondson was losing a non-league game to Southwestern, 19-18.
Edmondson (6-2, 6-1) completes the season next week with a league game against Southern, but the outcome will not matter because Northwestern (4-3, 4-3) was the only team with a chance to at least tie Edmondson for the title.
Northwestern needed victories over Patterson this week and Northern next week and a loss by Edmondson next week to tie Edmondson for the title.
Patterson (8-1, 6-1) and Northern (6-1, 6-0) were declared ineligible for the conference championship earlier this week.
Still, Patterson had its say in crowning the league champion by rolling up 318 yards total offense as quarterback Buddy Edmond passed for one touchdown and also ran for a score. William Rosenberger ran for two touchdowns for the Clippers and John Sauer ran for 129 yards and a touchdown.
Edmond passed for just 52 yards, but the junior went over the 1,000-yard mark for the second straight season. He finishes the season with 1,021 yards.
There has been a cloud of controversy hovering over the B Conference all season.
The city's office of interscholastic athletics would not allow Northern and Patterson to play each other this season because of a fight after last year's game, which led to a discussion about the teams' championship eligibility.
Last month, athletic directors from the B Conference schools agreed to give Patterson and Northern each a forfeit loss and allow them to be eligible for the title.
But Wednesday the MSA executive committee accepted an appeal by Northern to rescind the losses. However, because of an MSA bylaw, both teams were ruled ineligible to win the title because they did not play a complete league schedule.
