CDI BRANCH MAKES GRADE

The Annapolis branch office of CDI Temporary Services Inc. recently received high marks on customer service, garnering a 9.3 score on a scale from 1 to 10.

In addition, 33 percent of the customers surveyed gave the company a perfect 10 score, rating the firm the "top temporary service of their choice."

CDI's Annapolis office has enjoyed a steady rise in business, which the firm claims is an indication that the Annapolis area is comingout of the recession. Historically, CDI officials stated, the temporary service industry is one of the first to recover from recessionarytimes.

UNITED WAY 'STRIVES FOR 5'

The United Way of Central Maryland has joined with Partners for Giving, a philanthropic advocacy group, to promote "Strive for Five," a regionwide effort to encourage people to donate 5 percent of their income and volunteer five hours a week to local nonprofit organizations.

United Way officials, if they make an only 2.5 percent increase, could increase total giving in the region by $250 million. Money would go to support the work of morethan 100 United Way agencies which address issues such as homelessness, child day care, illiteracy, substance abuse, domestic violence, AIDS, hunger and child abuse.

DHL AIRWAYS SIGNS LEASE

DHL Airways Inc. of Redwood City, Calif., has signed a lease for approximately 15,811 square feet of space with FRP Development Corp. at 812 Oregon Ave. in the Oregon Business Center in Anne Arundel County.

DHL Worldwide Express is the largest air express network in the world and will relocate their Baltimore headquarters to the new facility.

Paul Danko of CB Commercial Real Estate Group Inc. represented the lessee, and Carey Winston represented the lessor in the transaction.

TAVERN LIGHTS FIREPLACES

Middleton Tavern at 2 Market Space in Annapolis has announced the lighting of their four working fireplaces in conjunction with the end of the boat show -- an annual tradition.

The 18th-century structure actually houses six fireplaces, but two are blocked off. One of the original fireplaces, with the original brick arch, can be seen in the back of the dining area.

Working fireplaces are located in the main downstairs dining room, the Oyster Bar, and one in each of the upstairs rooms.

Diners will be seated near fireplaces on request, depending on availability of space.

RUSSETT PUMPKIN SALE

Russett, the Baltimore-Washington corridor's newest planned community, is opening its first autumn with a pumpkin sale to benefit the Maryland City Teen Club.

The community's developer has donated more than 3 tons of pumpkins to the nearby youth group. The pumpkins will be sold at Russett Preview Park, off Route 198 at the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

All funds raised will go to the teen club, an outgrowth of the Maryland City Civic Association and a four-year grant from Anne Arundel County Department of Parks and Recreation.

MARRIOTT FINISHES RENOVATION

The Annapolis Marriott Waterfront Hotel created employment opportunities through its recently completed $3 million renovation program.

The hotel was acquired by the MP Associates Limited Partnership in 1989 and shortly thereafter announced initial renovation plans for the spring of 1990. The final renovations master plan, dictated by MP Associates and Annapolis Marriott staff, allowed for specific provisions which provided for the employment of Annapolis-based contractors and subcontractors.

The renovations included demolition of the Penthouse Restaurant and entire penthouse level facilities, the addition of 21 sleeping rooms and 50 oversized guest rooms, and a retrofitted fire protection and life-support sprinkler system.

Currently the hotel enjoys the highest occupancy in the city.

CHAMBER ADOPTS FAMILY

The Greater Annapolis Chamber of Commerce has adopted a family for Christmas, and is working with the Salvation Army to provide a good Christmas for three small children in need.

Donations of food, clothes, toys and wrapping paper, as well as monetary contributions, are being sought.

HORTICULTURE COURSES

Two of the 13 courses needed to qualify for a horticulture letter of recognition are offered this fall at Anne Arundel Community College, including Basic Landscape Design I from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 4 and 6 at Annapolis High School.

The course, which costs $30, teaches how to improve and beautify property by designing an overall plan. Topics include seasonal appearance, planting, order, proportion, style, form, pitfalls and maintenance.

Basic Landscape Design II builds upon previous courses, and meets from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dec. 9 and 11 at the college's Arnold campus.

The $30 course covers improved design graphics, evaluation of design, creating design planting beds and hard surfaces. Part one of the course is a prerequisite.

CREDIT SHOPPING

Basics food, which operates five Anne Arundel County stores, will experiment with accepting MOST and credit cards for payment in county stores.

The chain, which operates 25 stores in the Baltimore/Washington area, will accept MOST, Visa, Discoverand MasterCard at their checkout lanes. The program will begin in late October and will continue for five months.

FRAME A BUSINESS

Crofton Art & Frame recently opened its doors at Staples Corner at the intersection of Routes 424 and 450.

The art framing business will feature expert custom framing, as well as art to suit a variety of tastes and budgets. Owner Eric Zacharias is a Certified Picture Framer, and has worked as a framing consultant to many museums in Washington.

FOOD BANK GETS GIFT

The Maryland Food Bank Inc. recently received$32,000 from the UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of the United Parcel Service, as the second part of a three-year, $102,000 grant.

The Food Bank will use the funds for its prepared/perishable

food program Second Helping. The program collects donated food from local restaurants, grocery stores and caterers and distributes it to community feeding programs.

The UPS Foundation, which established its Distribution of Prepared Food Initiative in 1988, is donating a total of $1.8 million to selected prepared food programs around the nation.

NEW NAME FOR CENTER

Crofton Physical Therapy and Sports Rehab has opened for business at 2200 Defense Highway in Crofton.

The name has changed from Beatrice B. Keats, R.P.T., P.A., but the professionalstaff has been retained.

The new office includes five private treatment rooms, a large, fully equipped exercise room and a conference room.

PARTNERS NEEDED

Hope House, the county's only non-profit intermediate residential treatment program, is looking for businesses interested in creating a private partnership.

The private, accredited facility in Crownsville offers individual and group counseling, family support and education as well as communication-building skills.

NEW FIRM LAUNCHED

A retired Annapolis business executive recently established Claims Services Inc., offering a helping hand to hundreds of countians facing health-care insurance claims problems.

Frederick Daley, who has experience in managing an electronic device manufacturing firm, says MedClaims Services caters to persons with a substantial number of health-care insurance claims. It is, he says, an area of activity that has been largely overlooked.

MedClaims is prepared to act on behalf of anyone who must submit claims to any insurance carrier, including Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Medicareand companies selling "medigap" policies. It provides a computerizedsystem that tracks each bill, checks for accuracy and provides a permanent record.

BITE IN ENGLAND

The Anne Arundel Trade Council is inviting county businesses to participate in a delegation to the Business, Industry and Technology Exhibition in Sussex, England, Nov. 10-13.

BITE, the biggest exhibition of its kind in the south of England, attracts 10,000 visitors annually worldwide.

Membership in the delegation will provide an opportunity for county businesses to make contacts and expand their base of trade.
