'Walktoberfest' to benefit diabetes group


CURRENT volunteers' need and news:

American Diabetes Association is holding a 12-mile walk-a-thon on Sunday, Oct. 20, followed by a festival called "Walktoberfest" at Pimlico Race Course where the walk begins and ends. Registration is at 8 a.m and the walk begins at 9 p.m. For details call 486-5515.

Kennedy Institute will hold its 12th annual Phonathon from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. between Oct. 21 and Oct. 24, when more than 250 volunteers will make 12,000 calls to raise funds for children with brain disorders and developmental disabilities. The goal is $100,000, which would be $10,000 over last year's total. Originating from the Equitable Bank Building, corporate teams will volunteer to call people on designated evenings. United Way is holding a program called "Managing a Successful Volunteer Program" from 9 a.m to noon on Oct. 23 at the Ramada Inn, 1701 Belmont Ave., Baltimore 21207. The program will examine the diverse management skills and human, community and corporate factors that influence volunteer programs and more. Cost is $15 per person. Child Abuse Prevention Center wants volunteers to work with families to help break the cycle of child abuse by helping the families solve problems and build self-esteem. Volunteers would act as role model, supportive friend, understanding advocate and caring companion. For details, call 576-2414.
