Boston University -- Named former Boston Bruin David Silk assistant hockey coach.

Pittsburgh -- Agreed to multiyear contract extension with former Navy coach Paul Evans (99-57 at Pitt and 444-167 in 18 seasons overall).



Arena Football League -- Announced that San Antonio will get an expansion franchise to be run by San Antonio Spurs owner Red McCombs and his associates.

Dallas Cowboys -- Placed FB Alonzo Highsmith on waivers.

Indianapolis Colts -- Fired Ron Meyer, coach, and Leon Burtnett, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Named Rick

Venturi coach for the remainder of the season.


NHL -- Suspended Philadelphia Flyers G Ron Hextall for 6 games. Suspended the man Hextall slashed in a Sept. 22 preseason game -- Detroit Red Wings RW Jim Cummins -- for 3. The suspensions take effect Tuesday.

Meadowlands Racetrack -- Named former New York Rangers D Rod Seiling GM of standard-bred racing. Seiling, 46, has been the VP of government and industry relations at Ontario Jockey Club in Toronto, which operates Woodbine, Greenwood and Mohawk racetracks.


MILL -- Awarded franchise to Buffalo, N.Y., to begin play in the 1992 season. The team will be known as the Bandits.


Baltimore Blast -- Announced that Jean Harbor, Maryland Bays star, will not be trying out for the team. Reached agreement in principal with D Kris Kelderman, first-round draft pick from the University of Virginia. Informed M David Vaudreuil and fourth-round draft pick M John Maessner that it won't offer them contracts.
