Skipjacks get player shipment from Caps, but it's far from final

The Skipjacks' roster surely must be complete with the heavy list of 30 players the AHL team received after the Washington Capitals' 6-3 exhibition win over the Whalers last night in Hartford, Conn.

But, alas, more changes are sure to be coming by the end of the weekend.

The current list includes four goalies -- Shawn Simpson, Olaf Kolzig, Alain Harvey and Byron Dafoe. At least one will be off to Hampton Roads of the East Coast Hockey League, while two could go if the Caps' No. 1 goalie, Don Beaupre, decides to re-report to camp from Minnesota, where he is holding out for more money.

The list also includes two players -- defenseman Bobby Babcock and forward Steve Seftel -- who are out with injuries. Babcock has a broken wrist and won't be available until November. Seftel won't make it back from knee surgery until after Christmas.

Two surprises on the list were the return of forwards John Purves and Reggie Savage, who were given good odds to make the big club. Purves had a decent camp but Savage apparently wasn't much of a factor.

Both should be in uniform for the Jacks in Saturday's final exhibition, a doubleheader at the Arena that features the Jacks and Hershey Bears at 4 p.m. and the Caps and the Philadelphia Flyers at 8.

Three players -- goalie Jim Hrivnak and forwards Brent Hughes and Jeff Greenlaw -- remain on the fringe, and could get a final chance to make the Caps on Saturday. Hrivnak, who had 34 saves in the victory over Hartford last night, will certainly make the team if Beaupre fails to report.

Mike Lalor had a goal and two assists in last night's Caps victory. The winners scored five timmes in the opening period.

The 30 players sent to Baltimore after last night's game:

Goalies: Shawn Simpson, Byron Dafoe, Alain Harvey and Olaf Kolzig.

Defensemen: Bob Babcock, Wade Bartley, Chris Clarke, Mark Ferner, Rob Leask, Ken Lovsin, Jim Mathieson, Mark Sorenson and Jiri Vykoukal.

Forwards: Craig Duncanson, Victor Gervais, Trevor Halverson, Todd Hlushko, Bill Kovacs, Steve Martell, Harry Mews, Dave Morissette, Randy Pearce, John Purves, Bobby Reynolds, Reggie Savage, Steve Seftel, Tim Taylor, Richie Walcott and Simon Wheeldon.
