In the summer when 5Ks and 5-milers are the norm, many runners are there week in and week out. But in the fall when the races get longer, many point to specific races, knowing that recovery takes longer and racing every week is not practical.
Area runners Jim Hage, Gerry Clapper, Stavros Rologas and Andy Passmore were at the Philadelphia Distance Run nine days ago but absent from The Great Subway Race in Baltimore this week.
James Pryde, who finished the Philadelphia half-marathon in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 56 seconds, is an exception to the rule. He was back Sunday, winning The Great Subway Race, a 10-miler from the Reisterstown Plaza Metro station to the Brokerage, in 52:19. Tim Dunlap, 34, of Lancaster, Pa., was second in 52:30.
Defending Subway champion Rologas, who finished the Philadelphia Distance Run in 1:09:20, was there to watch the finish of The Great Subway -- but only from the sidelines.
"Last year, when I ran Philly," he said, "both my knees were bothering me. So I thought I would bag it [The Great Subway] this year."
Pryde, 38, is the first to admit that running distance races can exact its toll.
"I thought we were running 5-minute miles," Pryde said about The Great Subway Race. "But at the 5-mile split, I heard 25:55. By seven miles, I was done."
He was lucky that The Great Subway is largely downhill -- and fast.
"It wasn't as fast as I thought," Pryde said. "There are a couple of downhills at the end. But it's the same as the old 7-miler."
Despite racing on consecutive weekends, Pryde wants to be careful to avoid the injuries that often go with distance running. Last year, he won the Westminster Road Runners Club's Bachman Valley Half-Marathon while training for the Marine Corps Marathon. A hamstring pull caused him to pull out of that race, however.
"Maybe I'll run a fall marathon," Pryde said about his plans for this year. "I know every time I say that I get injured."
In the female division, Marge Rosasco, who finished in 60:09, beat second-place finisher Maggie Lasaga by more than 2 minutes.
