Lung group praises no-smoking policy

The Worcester County Commissioners have been commended by the American Lung Association for prohibiting smoking in county buildings.

At a recent meeting, Patty Hopkins, executive director of the Lung Association, said only Worcester and Talbot counties on the Eastern Shore have prohibited smoking.

Commissioner President Reginald Hancock said the decision to restrict smoking was made to help reduce the frequency of cancer.

O.C. bus schedule changes for fall

The fall bus schedule in Ocean City begins tomorrow. From 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. through Oct. 6, buses will arrive at 15-minute intervals. From 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Oct. 31, there will be service at one-hour intervals. From 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Oct. 7 through Oct. 31, there will be service at 30-minute intervals.

Bus stops are at every other block throughout town. The cost is $1 to ride all day from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. the next day. Monthly bus passes are available. Call 723-1607.

Life Saving museum re-releases book

The Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum on the south end of the boardwalk has released a third printing of the book "Ocean City, A Pictorial History." Written by Ocean City residents George and Suzanne Hurley, the 192-page book has 400 photographs and traces the history of the resort from the 1800s through the 1970s.

It is being re-released in honor of the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Ocean City Life Saving Station, which was transformed into a museum several years ago. The book is available at the museum gift shop for $19.95.

Names of top fugitives released at conference

A list of Maryland's top 10 fugitives was released at the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association Conference in Ocean City last week. The 10, who included nine men and one woman, are wanted for a variety of crimes, including rape, homicide and armed robbery.

Also, the police officer of the year, Detective Lee Lachman of Howard County, was honored at the three-day conference.

Boardwalk trams to run on weekends

Trams on the boardwalk will begin a fall schedule tomorrow, operating on Saturdays and Sundays, in good weather, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. until Oct. 27. Operations will resume again April 4 for spring weekends.
