King Missile likes lyrics that go straight to the point

Some songwriters like to take the long road in getting their point across, but John S. Hall, lead singer and songwriter for the college/alternative band King Missile, doesn't mince words.

"I just write what I feel," said Hall, whose band will open for The Connells at Hammerjacks tomorrow night. "I don't think in

metaphors and I'm not very good at using them. I can't compare someone's eyes or hair to something else. My mind doesn't work that way.

"I'm the kind of guy who will say 'I love you' over and over again instead of comparing it to the sky or a waterfall," he said. "I think it's touching when other people do it, but it's not for me."

PD Ironically enough, the band's most popular radio tune, "My Heart

Is A Flower," is nothing more than what Hall says he doesn't do.

"That song was kind of a goof," he said. "It's a parody of those kinds of people."

The New York band has received strong air play since releasing its major-label debut, "The Way To Salvation," in April. If it's a dose of Hall's reality that you want, give tracks like "The Story of Willy," "I Wish" or "Sex With You" a listen.

Before being signed to Atlantic last year, King Missile was The Big Apple's hottest unsigned property, releasing three successful independent albums.

* The area's biggest local country music show will take place for the second straight year at Merriweather Post Pavilion.

The Hard Travelers' benefit for Cystic Fibrosis, which previously was held at Downs Park in Anne Arundel County, will feature Barbara Mandrell and the reunited Starland Vocal Band, as well as the Travelers, who have just completed an independent album called "Silver and Gold."

Mack Bailey, who joined the Hard Travelers in 1987,said the acts hope to improve upon last year's $ 85,000 raised to fight Cystic Fibrosis.

Tickets for tommorow's 7 p.m. show are $25, $18.25 and $13.25.
