ThermoChem wins federal contract

ThermoChem Inc., which makes innovative energy devices, has won a $37 million contract partly funded by the federal government to construct and install a machine to convert coal into a gaseous fuel.

The company, a unit of Manufacturing and Technology Conversion International Inc. of Columbia, will install the "steam gasifier" in a Weyerhaeuser container board factory in Springfield, Ore., said T. John F. Becker, manager of product marketing and venture management at ThermoChem.

Most of ThermoChem's work is to be done at its Baltimore facility at Curtis Bay.
