Lake Clifton student shoots self at school 9th-grader is wounded in calf. No one else hurt.

THE BALTIMORE EVENING SUN

A 15-year-old student shot himself in the leg today inside Lake Clifton High School in northeast Baltimore.

The unidentified 9th-grader was taken to Union Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a bullet wound of the right calf. His condition was described as satisfactory.

No other students or staff members were injured.

Police and the new city school superintendent, Walter Ampry, offered conflicting accounts on where and how the shooting occurred.

Dennis Hill, the police spokesman, said the student was sitting in his homeroom class at about 8:45 a.m. He was playing with a handgun in his pocket and it accidentally discharged.

The youth walked out of the room to a teachers lounge and reported that he had been shot.

Ampry said the student shot himself while walking in a hallway of C unit, in the northern portion of the high school.

Following the shooting, police converged on the school in the 2800 block of St. Lo Drive near the Clifton Park public golf course.

Students were held in their rooms for more than two hours while police aided by K-9 dogs searched for the weapon. The handgun was not recovered.

Ampry said the students were finally released to other classes at about 11:10 a.m.
