Chris Windsor, 18, son of Charles and Paulette Windsor of Glen Burnie, recently participated in Salisbury State University's award-winning Freshman in the Wilderness program.

A 1991 graduate of Old Mill High School, Windsor has been admitted to SSU for this school year.

All new students at Salisbury are required to go through university orientation. As an option, they may take part in a wilderness trip. Students in the program have the choice of cycling in Maine or canoeing through the back country lakes of Ontario, Canada.

Windsor opted for the cycling trip.

The trip fosters a sense of self-reliance and trust among students.

The county Office of Community Development will sponsor a free seminar for first-time home buyers at 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 16 and 23 at Room 403 at Arundel Center North, 101 Crain Highway in Glen Burnie.

The seminars will be conducted by representatives from Loyola Federal Savings and Loan Association, Long and Foster Realtors, and American Title Guarantee Co.

The first of the two evening programs covers mortgage financing, budgeting, the loan application process, and county and state financing programs. On the second evening,speakers will describe the house search process, informed buyers, the inspection process and settlement.

The county Department of Utilities will conduct smoke testing between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. through Nov. 30 at thearea bounded by Marley Creek to the north, Hartwell and Dublin roadsto the south, Route 10 to the west and Solley Road to the east.

Acrew of three to four technicians will conduct the test by placing smoke blowers on the manholes, forcing smoke into the sewer lines and observing where it escapes. The smoke should escape from the roof vents of each house.

Fliers describing the test will be delivered to each house in the affected area at least 48 hours before starting. The flier will inform the resident what precautions to take to prevent the entry of smoke into the house.

This survey aids the departmentin evaluating the condition of the sanitary sewer system by identifying defects in the piping which could allow rain or ground water intothe system. This study will also check the condition of the sanitarypiping in each house.
