A true gathering of the tartans

"The wearing of tartans is always in the best of taste," says Isabella Cameron Kindness, who couldn't be happier to see the fashion world going wild for tartans. She and husband Gordon Kindness own The Thistle Stop, a wee bit of Scotland in the historic town of Newmarket.

Their shop caters to Scottish tastes, with tartans and all the trimings needed to assemble a correct and traditional costume.

But wading through the hundreds of certified patterns and weaves to find the right to wear the right family tartan can require a bit of research. The designs appropriate to specific family and tribal names can be confusing.

To help novice tartan shoppers and as an occasion for some highland fun, the Kindnesses have scheduled Highland Heritage Weekend on Sept. 28 and 29. with games, entertainment, food and pipers. The highlight that weekend will be a fashion show re-creating a traditional highland wedding with bride and groom and wedding party turned out in full regalia.

The Thistle Stop, 5 W. Main St., Newmarket, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Heritage Weekend. The fashion show and celebration begin at 2 both days. Call 865-3140 for more information.
