Support for families of all types

FAMILIES TAKE many different shapes these days and, likewise, face many situations not common to families of just a few years ago. Along with the problems have also come some solutions. Here are some programs of interest:

* Help for those with aging parents. The Jewish Family Life Institute of Jewish Family Services is putting together a four-session workshop on "You and Your Aging Parents." Social worker Rona Gross will lead the group through topics such as communicating concerns with parents, understanding physical and emotional changes and helping elderly family members remain independent.

The sessions will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning in October. Participants should register by Oct. 1 with Alice Kolman, workshop coordinator, at 466-9200, Ext. 387.

* Help for single and step parents. PRISM, a group designed to help parents understand their grief and begin to build a new family, is starting two groups this month. Each PRISM group meets for 12 weeks, plus a wrap-up session. A group begins Sept. 19 at Our Lady of Mount Providence in West Baltimore and another Sept. 20 at Good Samaritan Hospital. Both groups meet from 8 to 10 p.m. For more information, phone Sister Kate at Rainbows for All God's Children, 377-6907. There is a $50 fee and registration is required.

Serious fun

Families that just wanna have fun might consider this weekend's Kiddie Konvention at Valley Centre in Owings Mills. There will be face-painting, a cartoon festival, dancing, games, rides and more. Actually, there will be some serious exhibits, too, such as how to child-proof your home and have your child fingerprinted. It's all free from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the shopping center at 9616 Reisterstown Road.

Wednesday warning

If things are going well for you today, watch out for tomorrow. Researchers say couples fight most often on Wednesdays. They theorize that because Wednesday is far from both the preceding and following weekend, it's the toughest day to get through. By Thursday, however, folks feel better because they've gotten complaints off their chest. That's the day they fight least, say these researchers in Men's Health magazine.
