Coach: Courtney Vaughn, fifth year

Assistant coach: Gigi Jones

Last year's record: 7-5-3 overall, Class 3A Region I champion, 0-3-2 and fifth in the county, 2-2-2 and third in the Central Maryland Conference

Top returnees: Seniors, defenders Krista George, Kim Hoffmaster, attackers Lisa Yealdhall, Heather Jordon, Tracey Bantel, goalie Melanie Aprile

Top newcomers: Juniors, attackers Shelly Reichll, Carly Carter, defenders Melissa Meehan, Lori Hagood

Coach's comments: "After losing to Calvert in the playoffs last year, our players are really hungry. We have a lot of experience this year. They've played with each other and know the system."

The Carroll County Sun's outlook: This team has loads of experienced players who seem ready to win it all. If the midfield comes together, they just might havethe strength to win a state championship. The Lions also are dropping to Class 2A and while the state tournament field may be just as good as at the Class 3A level, Liberty's new region is a bit less challenging. Vaughn inherited a program that was struggling when she took over five years ago, but she now seems to have rebuilt the squad to its glory days of the early 1980s, when the Lions were one of the state's top teams. Based on experience, the Lions also have to be considered preseason favorites in both the county and the Central Maryland Conference.
