MSA C Conference

* Archbishop Curley (2-6) -- The Friars may end their tailspin of 9 straight losing seasons. Curley has experience and size with fourth-year OT/DT Al Schlegel (6-2, 260), OT/DE Dave Kersch (6-4, 225) and OT/LB Mike McArdle (6-0, 200). Coach Tony Brockmeyer's 1-back offense features seniors QB Ron Hartman and RB Mike Wisborn.

* Archbishop Spalding (0-8-1) -- Optimism stems from 12 returning lettermen, including seniors C/LB Matt DeMarco, OG/NG Ralph Ellis, FB/LB Osric Prioleau, TE Tim Alber, RB Dan Wolf and QB Brian Edwards (6-1, 155). "We'll match up with the opposition. Barring injuries, this will be the year of a change in the program," said coach Greg Fuhrman.

* Boys' Latin (3-6) -- Senior TE Bart Roskovich must show the way for a flock of underclassmen. Otherwise, coach Drew Haugh has talent at skill positions. Junior QB Matt Proutt, a starter since his freshman year, can look to junior WR Phil Booker and seniors TB Gene Lower and WR David Pollock.

* Douglass (1-6) -- The Ducks have great overall size and some experience but very little depth. There are only 30 players, but there is experience with players like OL/DLs Keith Parker, Lawrence Davis, Lawrence Campbell, Marlon Robinson and Robert Williams. RBs Steve Jackson and Ed Jones will shoulder the bulk of the offense.

* St. Mary's (8-2) -- Although the Saints are not quite as big, they do have heavily recruited OT/DG Shawn Harper (6-5, 270) and C/DT Rory Kiernan (6-4, 230) to anchor the lines. QB Adam Hrebiniak, a backup for 2 years, has run the option and thrown well so far. "Overall team speed is better, and the attitude is great," said coach Brad Best.

* St. Paul's (8-1) -- The Crusaders will build on 3 talented interior linemen and 2 young but experienced quarterbacks. Seniors Jeremy Eaton (OG/DT), Troy Thingelstad (OT/DT) and Andrew Borst (C) give 39th-year head coach Mitch Tullai "a good crux of people, and that could lead to good things." So could the neck-and-neck competition between junior QBs Joe Unitas (6-1) and Chas Offutt (6-0). St. Paul's must rebuild much of its offense.

* Severn (8-2) -- The Admirals graduated several offensive standouts, but coach Jim Doyle has 16 of 22 starters. DB/F Jack Mack intercepted 6 passes and caught 21 for 365 yards and 5 TDs. Senior LB/RB Jason Wade had 110 tackles and rushed for 490 yards and 5 TDs. Seniors OG/LB Brian Kight, FB/LB Randy Morse, OG/LB Todd Muendel and DE Graydon Ripley are proven.

* Southwestern (5-4) -- Southwestern is inexperienced but has good overall team speed and some experience in RB/LB Josea Tomlin, C/DE Lawrence Chavious and WR Damon Kimbrough. Gone is QB Diarra Davis, who ranked among the area's top passers last season. "We're improving every day," said second-year coach Fred Kaiss, although he has only 25 players so far.
