The Orioles close out a string of 12 straight games against the two division leaders. They held their own against the Twins, taking 3 of 6, but were swept by the Blue Jays in a 3-game set at Memorial Stadium. At 53-77, the club reached Labor Day with the fourth-most losses in club history at this point in the season. Only the 1954 team (93), the 1955 team (89) and the 1988 team (88) had more. Johnson has struggled all season, but has been known to pitch well against Toronto on occasion. He might want to make a good last impression tonight, because Jose Mesa figures to return to the rotation Saturday.
Blue Jays update
The AL East leaders have been hanging on by their fingernails lately, but playing the Orioles last week helped steady them for the final month. Candiotti dominated the Orioles on Wednesday, holding them to one hit over 8 innings before reliever Tom Henke completed the 1-hitter. Despite losing to the Yankees 4-2 yesterday, the Blue Jays have won 7 of their past 11 and appear to have the second-place Tigers at bay.
