Coach: Jeff Oeming, fourth year

Assistant coaches: Tom Hawkins, Bob Johnson, Doug Stump, Tom Mc Hugh, Bill Snowden, Greg Bricca, Brent Whelan, Rob Johnson

Last year's record: 7-3, 5-1 and tied for the Central Maryland Conference championship

Top returnees: Seniors, running back/defensive back Todd Leppert, offensive guard/linebacker James Stump, offensive tackle/defensive tackle Brent Black, fullback/defensive end Mike Hastings, running back/defensive back John Bird, linebacker/offensive tackle Brian Grimm

Top newcomers: Juniors, tight end/defensive end Bryan Offutt, running back/linebacker Gabe Zepp, cornerback/end Wayne Lips, quarterback Kirk Engel

Coach's comments: "It's real early to tell. The kids like football. They are in great condition in terms of football. We have to play good defense andnot give up good plays. We've prided ourselves on depth . . . We've got some spots to fill."

The Carroll County Sun's outlook: The junior varsity squad was 7-1 last year, and 20 seniors come back from the team that tied for first place in the CMC. Look for the Owls to continue to run, run, run offensively with returners Leppert, Hastings and Bird leading the way. They will still need to keep opponents' defense honest with the pass, so first-year quarterback Engel must get comfortable with the varsity offense. Black will take charge of the defensive line while co-captain Stump will provide leadership at the linebacking position. Assuming the newcomers live up to their potential and the returnees continue to perform as expected, the Owls will prove a formidable team and could be in the thick of the conference titlechase again this year. A tough non-league schedule should prepare the team for the CMC.
