'The Nerd' to play at Spotlighters
"The Nerd," a farce by the late playwright Larry Shue, will be presented weekends at the Spotlighters Theater, 817 St. Paul St., Friday through Sept. 29. The comedy is directed by Harriet Broady and features Joe Giffles, Rodney Atkins, Tom Siebert, Julia Ro and Roger Buchanan.
Show times are 8:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets prices are $7 and $8 with discounts available for students and senior citizens. For reservations, call 752-1225. Theatre Hopkins will inaugurate a three-week series of short story readings today at 2:15 p.m. with selections from works by Ernest Hemingway and Isak Dinesen. Mark E. Campion will read from the former's "Hills Like White Elephants" and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro"; Cherie Weinert will read from the latter's "Out of Africa" and "Shadows on the Grass."
The event takes place at the Merrick Barn of Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus. There is no admission charge but reservations are suggested; call 338-7159.
The series continues on Sept. 8 with works by Edgar Allen Poe and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and concludes Sept. 15 with works by Isaac Bashevis Singer and Eudora Welty. The Carl Filipiak Group will present its unique jazz-rock fusion Thursday at 7 p.m. when the free La Provence Thursday Night Concert Series continues at Hopkins Plaza. The Baltimore-based Filipiak Group will open for the jazz quintet Cabo Frio. The concerts -- named after their sponsor, La Provence Restaurant -- run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the plaza, located between Charles Street, Baltimore Street and Hopkins Plaza.
