Kenny Rogers to perform

Country music superstar Kenny Rogers, whose hits include "The Gambler," "Coward of the County" and "Lucille," will perform two shows at the Ocean City Convention Center Wednesday evening. Show times are 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., and tickets are $23.50. The Convention Center is located at 40th Street and the bay.


The folk ensemble Crab Alley will be the featured attraction at this Thursday's coffee house at Berlin's Old Globe Theatre. Known for its lilting harmonies, the Easton-based group plays traditional, Chesapeake Bay-flavored folk music on authentic instruments.

The Globe is at 12 Broad St. in Berlin (about 8 miles west of Ocean City). The theater also has a book and gift shop and an art and antique gallery. The current exhibit features classic work boat and sailing vessel models created by Eastern Shore artists.


Doors open for the coffee house at 7 p.m., with show time at 8 p.m. There's an $8 cover charge. For reservations, call 641-0784.

Karate tourney to begin Friday

The World Karate Association's U.S. Open National Karate Championships comes for the first time to the Ocean City Convention Center Friday and Saturday. Between 1,500 and 2,500 participants are expected for the event, during which a new WKA Grand Champion will be crowned.

Jean Frenette, one of the stars of the "Police Academy" moviesand Hosung Pak, who played Rafael in the latest "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie, will be on hand all weekend for autograph signing. A martial arts trade expo will take place simultaneously with the championship events, which include the following:

Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: world team elimination competition. Friday, 7:30 p.m.: "The Battle at the Beach," featuring the world karate welterweight title fight. Saturday, 9 a.m to 5 p.m.: Champion fights in 100 divisions. Saturday, 7:30 p.m.: team finals and adult black belt finals.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children for each event except Friday night's "Battle at the Beach." Friday night tickets are $30, $20 and $12. Proceeds benefit the Eastern Shore chapter of the March of Dimes. For more information, call (301) 749-7545
