A Gambrills man yesterday admitted choking and raping a 19-year-old woman last August in a Crofton parking lot.

Abner David Stevens pleaded guilty in county Circuit Court to first-degree rape in return for a prosecutor's promise to recommend a sentence of not more than 25years in prison. First-degree rape carries a maximum penalty of lifein prison.

Stevens, 31, of the 140 block of Jackson Street, was arrested in February after DNA tests linked him to the Aug. 18, 1990, rape of a Pizza Hut employee, Assistant State's Attorney Ronald M. Naditch said.

The prosecutor said the woman left work about 11 that night and, as she walked south on Route 3, rejected an offer for a ride from a man in a green 1978 Pinto.

Naditch said the man later emerged from some bushes near a shopping center at the intersection of Routes 3 and 424 and grabbed the woman by the neck, choking her for about five minutes. The man then threw her on the ground and raped her, Naditch said.

County police officers shortly thereafter found a green Pinto, with the hood still warm, in front of Stevens' house, and Stevens gave conflicting statements on when he had last driven the car, Naditch said. Tests later showed a match between Stevens' DNA and DNA foundin semen collected from the woman's underwear, the prosecutor said.

From a photographic lineup, the woman identified Stevens as her attacker, and a warrant was issued Feb. 19 for his arrest.

Stevens is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 2.
