Chicago Cubs -- Recalled P Rick Sutcliffe from an injury-rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Iowa. Recalled C Joe Girardi from Iowa. Sent C Damon Berryhill (.176 in 136 AB) and C Hector Villanueva (.240 in 100 AB) to Iowa.

Cleveland Indians -- Placed C Sandy Alomar Jr. (strained right hip flexor muscle) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to July 29. Claimed IF Tony Perezchica (.229 in 23 games with the San Francisco Giants).

Kansas City Royals -- Placed OF Gary Thurman (torn medial collateral ligament in right knee) on the 15-day DL. Announced that P Steve Crawford will undergo arthroscopic surgery tomorrow to remove cartilage from his left knee. Recalled OF Harvey Pulliam from Class AAA Omaha.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Announced that SS Alfredo Griffin underwent surgery to repair his fractured right cheekbone and will be sidelined four to six weeks.

Seattle Mariners -- Purchased the contract of P Dave Fleming from Class AA Jacksonville. Placed P Keith Comstock (strained left shoulder) on the 15-day DL.

Texas Rangers -- Placed P Brad Arnsberg (inflamed right elbow) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Friday. Recalled P Gerald Alexander (4-1, 3.77 ERA for Texas) from Class AAA Oklahoma City.


Dallas Mavericks -- Signed F Terry Davis to a 2-year contract.

Houston Rockets -- Signed John Killilea, Carroll Dawson and Rudy Tomjanovich, assistant coaches, and Robert Barr, strength coach, to multiyear contract extensions.

Albany Patroons (CBA) -- Named Charley Rosen head coach.


Atlanta Falcons -- Waived OT Pete Lucas. Agreed to terms with LB Tim Green.

Miami Dolphins -- Signed WR Randal Hill, first-round draft pick, to a 3-year contract estimated at $2.1 million.

Minnesota Vikings -- Waived RB Gerald Hudson and RB David Fair.

New York Giants -- Signed LB Steve DeOssie for 2 years.

New York Jets -- Waived LB Dannie Lockett, co-defensive MVP of the WLAF-champion London Monarchs. Lockett missed the initial 10 workouts of training camp due to whiplash suffered in a car crash.

San Diego Chargers -- Signed OL Broderick Thompson.


Hartford Whalers -- Named Darcy Regier and Claude Larose assistant coaches.

Los Angeles Kings -- Signed free-agent D Charlie Huddy (5 goals, 22 assists for the Edmonton Oilers) to a multiyear contract. The Kings acquired his rights from the Minnesota North Stars, who picked him in the expansion draft. Los Angeles matched an contract offer made by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Montreal Canadiens -- Signed free-agent D Steve Veilleux (0 goals, 9 assists for IHL Milwaukee) to a 2-year contract.

U.S. Hockey -- Announced that G Scott Gordon, who played for the AHL Baltimore Skipjacks in 1987-88, was on the preliminary roster, which will be cut from 31 to 20 for the 1992 Olympics.
