LAUREL -- Jockey Joe Rocco enjoyed a successful afternoon at Laurel Race Course yesterday when he booted home four winners.
Rocco won races 1, 5, 7 and 9 and joins an already jumbled jockeys' race.
"It's good to get back in the game," said Rocco, who had a relatively slow start at the 19-day-old meeting.
One of Rocco's five losers yesterday came in the $20,000 turf feature in which Resurgent Kris, ridden by Santos Chavez, posted a nine-length victory. Resurgent Kris, a 3-year-old filly, ran her record on turf to 3-for-4 with the win.
NOTES: Rocco, with 12 winners at the meet, moved into seventh place in the standings. Leader Mario Pino (19) maintains a 2-win margin over Mike Luzzi. . . . A special "steeplechase-only" nomination will be allowed this year only, through Aug. 8, for the $50,000 Ryland Homes Maryland Steeplechase on the Sept. 8 Maryland Million program. . . . When Stanley Hough bought a colt by Phone Trick at a 2-year-old sale in Florida in February for $135,000, the last 2 losing bids were made by Arnold Heft and Dale Lucas. The colt became Caller I.D., a 9-length winner of Friday's Saratoga Special. He might well have ended up in the Maryland barn of either Jerry Robb (Heft) or Ben Perkins Jr. (Lucas). . . . Starfield and Sweet Alex, both Maryland-based, were also-rans in the $150,000-added Spicy Living Handicap at Rockingham Park in New Hampshire yesterday. . . . Maryland-based Goldminer's Dream, ridden by Edgar Prado, finished second by a half-length in the $30,000 Tyro Stakes for 2-year-olds at Monmouth Park yesterday.
