Several Harford County residents won gold medals at last weekend's Maryland State Games. An Olympic-style two-day competition for Maryland residents, the games were held at sites primarily near Catonsville.
Rusty Barth, of Joppa, took the gold in men's freestyle archery competition.
Colleen Akehurst, Bel Air, won the girls' under-16 tennis championship, while Beth Dale, of Fallston, took the women's open gold medalmatch.
In swimming, Michelle Kistner, of Bel Air, earned three gold medals and Kathy Rising, of Abingdon, came home with two. Kistner,17, won the 100-meter freestyle, 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly for girls under 18.
Rising, 13, took the 50 breast stroke and100 individual medley in girls under 14. Beth Lingelbach, of Bel Air, won the 100 backstroke for girls under 18.
Two area wrestlers also won gold medals. Matt Slutzky, a three-time state high school champion from Aberdeen High, won the 141-pound high school class in freestyle.
Gino Amasia, 13, of Fallston, took the junior high 82-pound class in Greco-Roman wrestling.
