Denver plans big playing field

THE BALTIMORE SUN

Proposed dimensions for Denver's new baseball stadium would make it the largest in the major leagues.

Taking into consideration that a ball travels about 10 percent farther in Denver's mile-high altitude, the Colorado Rockies owners have proposed distances of 340-350 feet down the foul lines, 390-405 feet in the power alleys and 425-435 feet to center field.

The foul-line and power-alley distances would likely be greater than any other major-league park except Wrigley Field, which has foul-line distances of 355 feet in left and 353 feet in right, and possibly Cleveland Stadium, which has 400-foot power alleys.

* CUBS: Relief pitcher Dave Smith underwent exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, where a slight tear was detected. Smith, 0-5 with 16 saves, went on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and is expected to be out three to four weeks.

* BRAVES: Atlanta signed a three-year broadcast contract with WPCH-FM and WGST-AM, making the Braves the first team in the majors to have an FM flagship station.
