The American Softball Association Men's Class 'C' State softball championships will get under way at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Carroll County Sports Complex, north of Westminster.

The two-day affair will feature 20 teams -- including Vee's Tees of the Carroll County Men's League.

Vee's Tees is currently in third place of the Carroll 'A' Division with a 15-7 record.

The finals are tentatively scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.

In other sports this weekend:

* Three county youth softball teams are headed to the National Softball Association World Series this weekend in Charlotte, N.C., and Rock Hill, S.C. -- neighboring cities.

Both the Westminster Rockets and Hampstead Hammers will compete in the NSA under-14 tournament, and the Westminster Rockets are taking part in the 12-under division.

Opening ceremonies began today with game times yet to be determined at press time. Brackets for tournament teams are not determined until all teams arrive at the site.

Additionally, two county NSA umpires -- Larry McElroy andJoe Perrin -- will be calling balls and strikes at the event.

At least three other county teams are headed for Amateur Softball Association tournaments scattered around the country in early August.

* The Taneytown Cardinals (25-5) of the South Penn League enter the final week of the season with a narrow, one-game lead over Cashtown, Pa., (23-5) after winning a pair from Littlestown, Pa., Saturday and seeing Cashtown split a twin bill with Brushtown, Pa., Sunday.

The Westminster Elks (13-17) also had a successful weekend taking two at Mummasburg, Pa., Sunday afternoon.

The Cards will travel to Mummasburg at 6:15 p.m. Thursday before wrapping up the regular season at home against Thurmont 7 p.m. Saturday.

The Elks are on the road the final week of the season, taking on Cashtown at 6:15 p.m. Thursday before heading to Hanover, Pa., at 2 p.m. Saturday. Cashtown will wrap up its season at Littlestown Sunday.

* Eight teams will be competing in the Westminster Riding Club Novice Meet, slated for 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Westminster Municipal Pool, South Carroll, Freedom and the host team will represent Carroll while four teams from the Division IV ranks -- Dulaney of Baltimore County, Meadowbrook, Woodbridge Valley and Springlake -- also will be swimming.

Today, the top individuals from all seven divisions will compete in the Central Maryland Individual Championships at Padonia Park Swim Club in Baltimore County. Just a handful of county swimmers usually qualifies for this meet.

The divisional championships will take place Saturday with Taneytown playing host to the Division VII meet; Division II South Carroll swimming at West Howard; the Westminster Riding Club (2-3) will travel to Woodbridge Valley in the Division IV meet; and Division VI Westminster Municipal Pool (2-3) swims at Westview, Baltimore County.

* It'splayoff time in the Carroll County Lacrosse Association Summer League.

Sunday in the travel division, Mount Washington (3-3) advanced to the semifinals with a 12-5 win over Leeland Mechanical (1-4) in a first-round matchup. They will next face Monaghan's Pub (4-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sandymount Park.

Mar-Ja, 9-7 winners over Triangle Sign in the travel division will take on Lil' Abner's (4-1) at 4 p.m.Saturday at Sandymount.

The Carroll division concluded its regular season Sunday, as international Foreign Car (6-0) clinched first place with an 8-3 win over Dr. Deigert's Drill Team (4-2).

International will face fourth-place A.P. Boone (0-6), while Dr. Deigert's will take on Farmers & Merchants Bank (2-4) in semifinal Carroll division playoffs Wednesday at the Carroll County Sports Complex. Both gamesare slated for 6:30 p.m.

* The Carroll County Tennis Association will play host to a boys and girls Junior Tournament starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Westminster City Playground.

The girls finals is slated for 9 a.m. Sunday followed by the boys at 10:30 a.m.

* A pair of Carroll men's softball leagues will be having postseason tournaments.

The Carroll County Church League will conclude its seasonwith a tournament starting Saturday at Carroll County Community College in Westminster. Finals are slated for Sunday afternoon.

The Carroll County Men's FastPitch League single-elimination tournament began Monday and the finals are set for 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Central Laundry Pre-Release Unit in Eldersburg.
