A 9-year-old girl was shot in the chest last night while walking toward a snowball stand in East Baltimore. The victim, Lakia Bradford, of the 700 block of N. Luzerne Ave., was in guarded condition today in the pediatric intensive care unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Police said Lakia and her sister, Latrice, 11, were walking to the stand in the 2400 block of E. Madison St. around 8:30 p.m. when she felt a sudden sharp pain in her chest and fell down.
Thinking she was stung by a bee, Lakia walked with her sister about a half block to their home and told her mother, Jennifer Queen, 36. Queen lifted Lakia's shirt and found a small caliber bullet wound to the upper right chest. Police said it was unclear whether the bullet that hit the girl was a stray shot or intended for someone else.
