Klein ties for lead in junior qualifier


ORLANDO, Fla. -- Justin Klein of Phoenix, Md., shot a 2-under-par 35-3570 at the Bay Hill Club yesterday, and was later tied by Tiger Woods of Cypress, Calif., for the first-round lead in on-site qualifying for the 44th USGA Junior Amateur championship.

Klein, 17, had two birdies and a bogey on the front nine, got to 4-under par with his third backside birdie at No. 17, then double-bogeyed the 441-yard finishing hole.

The other Maryland scorers in the rain-delayed round were Scott Tiernan, Bethesda, 39-4281, and Danny Mensh, Woodmont, 41-4182.

USGA Women's Amateur

CHEVY CHASE -- Debbie Eckroth of Harrisburg, Pa., the first player to finish, posted 38-3775 at Columbia CC, and it held up as the low qualifying score. LaRee Sugg of Petersburg, Va., the last player to finish, was in position to be low among the 22 vying for eight available places, but she four-putted the last hole and finished 37-3976.

First-time qualifiers for the Aug. 5-10 championship at Prairie Dunes CC in Hutchinson, Kan., included Sheila Dagucon, Montgomery CC, 76; Kim Cayce, Congressional CC, 79; and Tricia Gates, from Columbia CC, 79.

The best finish by a Baltimore-area player was an 80 by Bonnie Fry (second alternate) of Maryland Golf & CC in Bel Air.

Shannon Hanley, the new Maryland State Women's Amateur champion, wound up with a 40-4383.

Maryland State Juniors

MITCHELLVILLE -- Jenny Chuasiriporn, 14, of Hunt Valley Golf Club, recorded an 80 to win the girls division of the annual Maryland State Golf Association Junior championships at Lake Arbor Golf Club. Kristin Dollenberg of Baltimore CC was second with a 94.

In the boys division, Dan Falls of Montgomery Village won the overall title with a 71, followed by Chris York, Bethesda, 75.

Overall: Jenny Chuasiriporn, Hunt Valley, 80; Kristin Dollenberg, Baltimore CC, 94. 16-17: Arianna Smith, Congressional, 107. 10-13: Emily Johnson, Chevy Chase, 98.
